3. Las conjugaciones de “ser”
Yo Soy Nosotros Somos
Tú Eres
Él, Ella, Ud. Es Ellos, Ellas, Uds.Son
* I like to conjugate verbs in this order…it will be
helpful later on!
4. What else do we know about
ser?
•It’s irregular!
However, do you think that all
verbs are irregular??
No!
5. Many verbs are not irregular
and luckily for us, they follow a
pattern…
Today, you will learn what that
pattern is called and how it
works!
6. We call the process of this
pattern “to conjugate”. When
you conjugate a verb you are
basically changing it around a
bit to make it work…
In other words, in order to do
all of those things from the first
slide (talk about & to basically
all life forms, we need to
conjugate a verb.
7. To conjugate a verb, begin with
the infinitive…
**Remember that verbs like
“ser” do not follow this
patters, so if I say that it’s
irregular, don’t do this!**
8. 1. Step 1: look at the infinitive*
Comprar
*Infinitive: a verb that
hasn’t been conjugated
yet.
9. 2. Step 2: Identify the parts of
this verb.
Comprar
The stem!
*Note, this ends in ar, so it is an ar The ending!
verb…there are several other types, but for
now, we’re focusing on ar verbs.
10. 3. Step 3: Remove the ending.
Removed!
Compr ar
The stem! The ending!
11. 4. Step 4: Add on new endings.
For all –ar verbs we use the same
set of endings. Looking at and/or
hearing this ending is what will let
you know who is being spoken to
or about…how cool is that?!
12. 4. Step 4: Add on new
endings, continued.
Comprar: to buy
Think about how we would do this
in English…
I buy We buy
You buy
He/She buys They/Y’all buy
13. 4. Step 4: Add on new
endings, continued.
Comprar: to buy
And now let’s do it in Spanish. For all ar
verbs, we add on these endings…
Yo o Nosotros amos
Tú as
Él, Ella, Ud. a Ellos, Ellas, Uds. an
14. 4. Step 4: Add on new
endings, continued.
so…
Compr
+ an
o, as, a, amos,
Yo compro Nosotros compr amos
Tú compras
Él, Ella, compr a Ellos, Ellas, compr an
Ud. Uds.
15. 4. Step 4: Add on new
endings, continued.
Comprar: to buy
Yo compro Nosotros compramos
Tú compras
Él, Ella, compra
Ellos, Ellas, compran
Ud. Uds.
16. 4. Step 4: Add on new
endings, continued.
I buy- compro We buy- compramos
You buy- compras
He/She buys- They/Y’all buy-
compra compran
17. Let’s recapitulate…
Step 1: look at the infinitive.
Step 2: Identify the parts of
the verb.
Step 3: Remove the ending.
Step 4: Add on new
endings, continued.
18. And why do we do
this??
