Challenges
VoIP and IP interactive communications introduce technical challenges and unique requirements to delivering secure and high quality services to residential and business customers, including:
Security• – hide and protect network resources from attack and ensure privacy of communications
Service reach• – deliver service to customer endpoints and handsets that are difficult to reach—either due to firewalls or poor in-building coverage—or to networks with differing or conflicting network characteristics such as IP addresses, signaling and transport protocols, encryption
SLA assurance• – handle latency sensitive traffic with high priority and maintain service availability during abnormal busy periods
Revenue and cost optimization• – protect against theft and abuse of service and capture session data for billing and traffic management and planning
Regulatory compliance• – enable emergency service routing and lawful intercept in order to comply with government regulations for VoIP
To overcome these challenges, session border controllers (SBCs) are used at LTE access borders to solve these challenges associated with providing trusted, first class interactive communications services.
Benefits
Long Term Evolution (LTE) is the next evolutionary step for mobile broadband. While initially targeted for mobile Internet access services, the all-IP RAN can serve as an access network for voice and rich multimedia communication services, not just high- speed data. Voice and other IP interactive communications are key for increasing ARPU and competitive viability in the era of ubiquitous mobile broadband Internet.
Several benefits can be realized by offering IP-based telephony and other interactive communication services. Service providers can:
Increase revenue and profitability•
Foster customer loyalty with multiple service offerings over a single broadband • wireless connection
Differentiate from the competition with innovative SIP- and IMS-based services•
Leverage IP interconnects for cost savings•
Deliver converged fixed and mobile services•
Applications
LTE delivers high-speed broadband IP connectivity to fixed or mobile endpoints which can be leveraged to deliver interactive voice, video and multimedia services, including:
Mobile services – consumer
• and business telephony
Residential services – voice
• over broadband
Business services – IP
• Centrex and hosted business voice services
IP trunking for IP PBXs and
• unified communication servers
IMS- or SIP-based IP interac• tive communications such as video share, instant messaging, presence-based applications and gaming
