Challenges
VoIP and IP interactive communications introduce technical challenges and unique requirements to delivering secure and high quality services to residential and business customers, including:
Security• – hide and protect network resources from attack and ensure privacy of communications
Service reach• – deliver service to customer endpoints and handsets that are difficult to reach—either due to firewalls or poor in-building coverage—or to networks with differing or conflicting network characteristics such as IP addresses, signaling and transport protocols, encryption
SLA assurance• – handle latency sensitive traffic with high priority and maintain service availability during abnormal busy periods
Revenue and cost optimization• – protect against theft and abuse of service and capture session data for billing and traffic management and planning
Regulatory compliance• – enable emergency service routing and lawful intercept in order to comply with government regulations for VoIP
To overcome these challenges, session border controllers (SBCs) are used at LTE access borders to solve these challenges associated with providing trusted, first class interactive communications services.
Benefits
Long Term Evolution (LTE) is the next evolutionary step for mobile broadband. While initially targeted for mobile Internet access services, the all-IP RAN can serve as an access network for voice and rich multimedia communication services, not just high- speed data. Voice and other IP interactive communications are key for increasing ARPU and competitive viability in the era of ubiquitous mobile broadband Internet.
Several benefits can be realized by offering IP-based telephony and other interactive communication services. Service providers can:
Increase revenue and profitability•
Foster customer loyalty with multiple service offerings over a single broadband • wireless connection
Differentiate from the competition with innovative SIP- and IMS-based services•
Leverage IP interconnects for cost savings•
Deliver converged fixed and mobile services•
Applications
LTE delivers high-speed broadband IP connectivity to fixed or mobile endpoints which can be leveraged to deliver interactive voice, video and multimedia services, including:
Mobile services – consumer
• and business telephony
Residential services – voice
• over broadband
Business services – IP
• Centrex and hosted business voice services
IP trunking for IP PBXs and
• unified communication servers
IMS- or SIP-based IP interac• tive communications such as video share, instant messaging, presence-based applications and gaming
LTE voice and interactive communications
Acme Packet SBC features and benefits
The Net-Net SBC controls SIP sessions between the service core and the LTE connected or SAE-served endpoint, phone or client. It provides critical control in five functional areas: security, service reach maximization, SLA assurance, revenue and cost optimization and regulatory compliance.
Security – In IP networks, critical resources can be exposed to external parties elevating the risks of denial of service (DoS), eavesdropping and other malicious attacks. To protect critical service elements such as softswitches, IMS CSCF servers and application servers in the network, Acme Packet’s unique Net-SAFE™ security architecture helps service providers build trusted and secure access borders, ensuring network and service availability. Acme Packet’s security features also protect service provider and customer privacy.
Service reach maximization – Numerous characteristics of IP networks such as overlapping or different IP address spaces
(e.g., IPv4 and IPv6) and differences in signaling protocols can disrupt the delivery of services to LTE endpoints. Acme Packet SBCs provide numerous address and protocol translation capabilities to maximize the types of endpoints, service infrastructure and network topologies supported, allowing service providers to increase their addressable customer base.
SLA assurance – Oversubscribed networks and service infrastructure can negatively impact customers. Acme Packet’s SBCs provide session admission control, load balancing and QoS marking and reporting features that deliver assured service quality and network availability during abnormal busy periods or network events.
Revenue and cost optimization – IP interactive communication services are designed to make money for service providers. Yet, inaccurate billing, fraud and inefficient network utilization can ruin these revenue streams or detract from profitability. Acme Packet SBCs deliver call routing, bandwidth policing and accounting features to aid in revenue collection and ensure the most cost effective usage of a service provider’s network.
Regulatory compliance – Public safety and law enforcement regulations for traditional phone
networks are being applied to VoIP networks around the world. As voice transitions to the all-IP
LTE RAN, regulatory compliance requirements will impact mobile service providers. Acme Packet
SBCs deliver call routing and session replication features and interfaces to aid service providers
in complying with government regulations for IP interactive communications.

Solution
Acme Packet’s LTE voice and interactive communications solution features its SBCs deployed at the access border of the SIP or IMS service network. Acme Packet supports two architectural approaches to LTE voice and interactive communications: MSC VoIP and IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS). With MSC VoIP, the legacy MSC and SMS core infrastructure provides the voice and messaging services, but are delivered over the all-IP LTE RAN using a combination of convergence servers (CS), media gateways and SBCs at the LTE access border. In IMS networks, Acme Packet’s SBC performs the role of the P-CSCF and IMS-AGW. The SBC is deployed at the border between the Evolved Packet Core (EPC) and the IMS data centers.
Acme Packet’s SBC provides critical control functions to deliver high quality interactive communications— voice, video and multimedia sessions—and streaming video across LTE IP access network borders. These access networks include both the licensed spectrum LTE RAN and the access network comprised of the untrusted Internet and WiFi networks used by dual-mode endpoints and femotocell access points.
