Este documento explica el modo subjuntivo en español. El subjuntivo se usa para expresar sentimientos, juicios y emociones relacionadas con una acción que es posible, dudosa o incierta, en contraste con el modo indicativo que se usa para describir hechos ciertos. El documento también proporciona ejemplos de cuando se debe usar el subjuntivo en oraciones subordinadas y las conjunciones que requieren el subjuntivo.

Remember, the subjunctive is not a tense, but
rather a mood
the mood indicates the speaker’s feelings or
attitude toward the action

Basic rule for knowing when to use the subjunctive:
Subjunctive implies subjectivity. if there exists
the possibility that the action about which i am
speaking has not or may not take place it is
necessary to use the subjunctive. however, if it is
a realized fact that the action has taken or definitely
will take place the indicative is used.

indicative
indicative: objective and is used to describe
facts. it states what is considered to be certain. the
mood of what is.
subjunctive: subjective. used to express
feelings, judgements and emotions relating to an
action. it states what is considered to be desirable,
possible, doubtful, uncertain, etc. it is the mood of
what may or might be.

the subjunctive usually occurs in dependent
clauses, that is, in clauses that cannot stand alone
and that are connected to the main clause

subordinate adjective clauses: dependent
clause used as an adjective (modifying a noun or
pronoun)
• Necesitamos una computadora que funcione.
The subjunctive is used in adjective clauses if the
noun or pronoun in the main clause is indefinite or
negative.

• (she may never find him - subjunctive)
• Tiene un esposo que es alto y guapo.
• (definite person - indicative)
• No hay ninguna persona aquí que sea alto ni
guapo.

19. Subjunctive
adverb clauses: dependent clause used as an
adverb. answers the questions - when?, where?,
how?, why?,etc.
the subjunctive is used in the adverb clauses if
uncertainty, doubt, anticipation or indefiniteness is
expressed.

20. the following conjunctions ALWAYS use the
subjunctive:
En caso de que (in case that)
Sin que (without)
Con tal (de) que (provided that)
A menos que , a no ser que (unless)
Para que, a fin de que (in order that, so that)
Antes (de) que (before)
A condición de que (on condition that)

21. ejemplos:
Trabaja mucho para que vivan bien.
No voy a no ser que vaya ella.
no hago nada sin que lo sepan mis padres.
Lleva un paraguas en caso de que llueva.

subjunctive when they introduce an anticipated
situation (future). Indicative is used when the
situation is completed or habitual.
