3. DECLARATION OF INTENTIONS
TheLawonthePreventionofOccupationalHazardstellsus,initsstatement
of motives, that the protection of workers against occupational hazards
requires an activity from the company that is not just re- duced
to formal compliance with a set of rights and obligations, but also to
the introduction of a genuine culture of prevention based, among other
principles, on offering information and training workers aimed at a
greater awareness of the hazards derived from the job and the way of
preventing them and avoiding them.
If we add to the above the fact that safety at work is a constitutional
right of which all workers should make use, you need to have a basic
knowledge in disciplines such as Safety at Work, Industrial Hygiene
4. Ergonomics and Applied Psychosociology.
It is for this purpose that MC MUTUAL has created this manual that
you are holding. It is a Basic Manual for the Prevention of Occupational
Hazards which will serve as a guide so that you can carry out your work
in conditions of safety and change certain unsafe work behaviours that
could damage your health and that of your workmates.
Therefore, we would ask you to read it with care and ask your superiors
about any doubt you may have about it.
DECLARATION OF INTENTIONS
5. DEFINITIONS
Industrial accident
According to Royal Legislative Decree
1/1994, of 20th June:
“Industrial accident means any body
injury that workers may undergo dur-
ing or as a result of the work that
they carry out for somebody else”.
Occupational Disease
From a preventative point of view,
an occupational disease is that which
deteriorates the worker’s health slowly
and gradually due to chronic exposure
to adverse conditions, whether these
are produced by the environment in
which the work is carried out or by
the way in which it is organised.
Health
The World Health Organisation (WHO) defines:
“Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-
being, and not just the absence of disease or pain”.
DEFINICIONES
Accidente de trabajo
Según el Real Decreto Legislativo
1/1994, de 20 de junio:
“Se entiende por accidente de traba-
jo toda lesión corporal que el traba-
jador sufra con ocasión o por conse-
cuencia del trabajo que ejecuta por
cuenta ajena”.
Enfermedad profesional

CAUSES OF
ACCIDENTS
Accidents do not happen by chance, but are the result of a series of
linked causes that end up producing an accident.
Basic causes
Personal factors Work factors
Absence of training and information Incorrect work habits
Trying to save time or effort Insufficient maintenance of the machines
Lack of motivation Incorrect use of equipment and tools
Immediate causes
Unsafe acts Unsafe conditions
Doing jobs without being qualified Lack of protection and railings on
machines
Overriding/changing the safety devices Lack of signposting in dangerous areas
Using tools in poor condition Lack of cleanliness and tidiness at work
By acting on the causes we can manage to
prevent accidents.
Causas inmediatas

ACCIDENT-QUALITY
RELATIONSHIP
A job well done is the reflection of a safe job. Therefore, carrying out a
job following criteria of quality consists of developing it under suitable
conditions of health and safety for the worker.
Working without safety involves a risk for workers, and potentially for the
people close to them as well. Unsafe acts and work accidents lead to a
series of additional, unnecessary, unwanted expenses and are a reflection
on the company of poor quality.
To work with quality one should:
• Avoid or reduce accidents as much as possible, having as one’s objective
a “zero accident” goal, by means of complying with regulations on
prevention.
RELACIÓN
ACCIDENTE-CALIDAD
8. 14 15
• Integrate prevention at all levels of the company. These levels are links
in a chain and they are all involved when adopting preventative atti-
tudes with the aim of achieving the desired integrated safety.
• Total quality is a concept which is completely incompatible with
accidents; by simply existing, accidents cause important losses in the
form of direct costs derived from the accident, wasted time, decrease
in production, etc. At the same time, safety is the most efficient tool
for achieving it.
• Safety is the key factor for being able to offer a quality service and at
the same time shows the importance and interest that the prevention
of occupational hazards has on one’s daily work.
A job well done is the reflection of a safe job.
ACCIDENT-QUALITY
RELATIONSHIP
seguro.

DERECHOS Y OBLIGACIONES
11. 20 21
SAFETY
Workplaces. Tidiness and cleanliness
Concept
The work area is considered to be the areas at the work centre, wheth-
er or not they are constructed, in which workers must stay or to which
they have access for work reasons. These include areas destined to
resting, first aid, hygiene services and dining rooms.
Hazards
Hazards at work may be multiple and diverse. The
most common ones include:
• Staff falling on the same level.
• Staff falling on to a different level.
• Bangs against stationary objects.
• Being run over or hit by vehicles.
Preventative measures
• The area and the workplace should be kept
clean and tidy.
• The corridors, stairways, circulation lanes and exits
should remain free of obstacles, have optimum
lighting conditions and at the same time be free of
fluids (water, oil, etc.) on the floor, so that their use
is free of hazards at all times.
• Waste, oil stains and residues of hazardous sub-
stances that could cause accidents (provoking
falls) or pollute the work environment should be
immediately removed, depositing them in waste
material recipients.
SEGURIDAD
Lugares de trabajo. Orden y limpieza
Concepto
desechable.
12. 22 23
• Remember that at work the following
should be complied with: “Everything in
its place and a place for everything”.
• Cleanliness and tidiness are the responsi-
bility of everyone and are absolutely nec-
essary to prevent accidents.
• Hand tools, matrices, moulds, tools, etc.,
should be kept in perfect order on sup-
ports, shelves, etc.
• Boards with nails and sheet metal cutouts can cause cuts and stabs
if they are left on the floor.
Stored material should be kept in order, taking into account that:
• Materials that could cause bangs and falls should not overhang the
shelves on which they are stored.
- Heavier material should be placed on the lower parts of the
shelves.
- Material that is used most or is the first to be collected should be
kept in the most accessible areas.
- Chemical products should be conveniently stored and labelled.
• The storage of objects and materials should not block access to fire extin-
guishers, fire-fighting material or evacuation doors.
• Workplaces should have suitable, sufficient signposting when it is
necessary to attract workers’ attention about the existence of certain
risks, prohibitions or obligations, as well as localising and identifying
determined means of protection, evacuation, emergency or first aid.
Cleanliness and tidiness are absolutely necessary
to prevent accidents.
SAFETY
SEGURIDAD
13. 24 25
Machines and tools
Concept
A machine is understood to be the set of pieces or
organs joined to each other (of which at least one of
them moves) and, if relevant, of organs for activating,
control and power circuits, etc., associated in a joint
way for a determined application, in particular for the
transformation, treatment, movement and condition-
ing of a material.
Hazards
• Getting trapped by and between objects.
• Bangs and contact with mobile elements of the
machine.
• Projection of particles.
Preventative measures
• All machines and tools must have the “CE” marking,
or in its defect a certificate that authorises its suitability
to current legal regulations.
• The machines must be subject to preventative and periodical
maintenance as per the indications of the manufacturer.
• Workers must be suitably informed about the function of the ma-
chine and tools they use during their working day, as well as the safety
mechanisms and systems they have.
• If the safety systems are not possible, workers will be provided with
the necessary personal protective equipment for each purpose.
• If splinters or particles are projected, screens will be installed as a
collective protective measure or, in their defect, eye protection must
be used.
SAFETY
Máquinas y herramientas
Concepto
SEGURIDAD
14. 26 27
• All transmission bodies (steering wheels,
pulleys, drums, cogs) must be protected.
The bodies of the protection must be well
fitted and attached. They should not be
removed while the machine is operating.
• Under no concept should safety devices be
made useless, changed and/or annulled.
• When supporting pieces, changing tools,
cleaning, preparing, etc., it should always
be done with the machine turned off and
if possible disconnected from the electrical
supply.
• The areas around machines should be kept
clean of shavings and spills of cutting liq-
uids.
• Any handling inside the machine should be done with the machine
turned off and with devices that prevent it from being put into
operation without the consent of the person who is handling it.
• Safety systems should be tried out periodically to check that they work
correctly, for example: micro cutouts that block robot doors, two-hand-
ed controls, approximation photoelectric cells, etc.
Any faults in them should be urgently communicated to your
supervisor. Their operation should be paralysed if they involve
hazards for workers or for third parties.
• As personal protective garments you should use gloves, goggles,
safety footwear, or others, depending on the hazard to which you are
exposed in your job.
Accidents caused by machines and tools generally
have serious consequences.
SAFETY
• Todos los órganos de transmisión (volan-
tes, poleas, tambores, engranajes) deben
estar protegidos. Las carcasas de protec-
ción deben estar bien colocadas y sujetas.
No deben extraerse con la máquina en
marcha.
SEGURIDAD
Los accidentes causados por máquinas y herramien-
tas derivan en general en consecuencias graves.
15. 28 29
Manual tools
Concept
These are work tools which in order to operate require only the physical
effort of people.
Hazards
• The tool falling while being handled.
• Bangs and cuts against objects and tools.
• Projection of particles.
• Skeletal muscle injuries.
Preventative measures
• The tools to be used should be suitable for each kind of task. They
should be used for the purpose for which they were designed and
built. Therefore, for example, you should not use screwdrivers as lev-
ers, or as chisels or bradawls.
• Remember to check that the handles or other elements are securely
attached.
• Keep the tools in their corresponding place, with their cover and/or
safety device, remembering to maintain cleanliness and tidiness at all
times.
• The handles of hammers should have a clean surface, without varnish
and should fit perfectly into the head of the hammer. You should not
use tools whose heads have burrs or deteriorated surfaces, due to the
risk of projection.
SAFETY
Herramientas manuales
Concepto
No deben
utilizarse herramientas cuyas cabezas presenten rebabas o superficies
SEGURIDAD
16. 30 31
• You should not keep tools in pockets or in belts, as when making
certain movements such as bending down, turning or climbing stairs,
you run the risk of injuring yourself.
• To prevent bangs caused by spanners, they should fit the head of the
nut or bolt perfectly and should be used perpendicularly to them.
• Whenever possible, it is better to use spanners than adjustable spanners
and it is safer to pull rather than push the spanner.
• Pliers and pincers should have a good cut and be clean and sharp.
They should not be used as a spanner for bolts or as a hammer.
• In the specific case of pneumatic tools: you should periodically inspect
the hoses and compressed air connections.
• You should not use compressed air to clean work clothes, or apply it
to your skin.
SAFETY

Working high up, on scaffolding, ladders or
construction sites
Concept
Construction is one of the activities which presents
most hazards and most varieties and where the
consequences of the hazards are serious, very serious
or even fatal.
Hazards
• People falling on to a different level.
• People falling on the same level.
• Loose objects falling.
• Treading on objects.
• Bangs, cuts and getting trapped.
Preventative measures
• The personal protective equipment to be used will depend on the
existing hazards at any time. As a general rule the following should be
used: helmet, safety boots with non-perforating sole, gloves, safety
goggles, safety belt and/or harness.
• Any defects in the material that you use should immediately be notified
to your supervisor.
• You should never circulate on roofs made of fragile material, such as
fibre cement, plastic material, etc. without a safety barrier.
• You should not throw builder’s rubble or demolition material in a
free, uncontrolled way. Use chutes to remove materials of any nature
between different levels and heights.
• If the scaffolding has wheels, they should be carefully blocked.
SAFETY

be done facing them and without carrying
loads that make it difficult for you to grasp
the sides.
• Ladders may not be used by more than one
person at a time.
• You should not use ladders that have been
added on to, are deformed, with broken
rungs, or that do not guarantee a non-slip
system.
• Before climbing a ladder you should check
that the soles of your footwear do not have
oil, mud or any other element that could
make your foot slip.
• The angle of the ladder should be safe, considering it to be safe when
the distance that separates the base from the wall is a quarter of the
vertical length to the point of support L/4.
Construction is one of the activities which pres-
ent most hazards and where the consequences of
the hazards can be very serious or even fatal.
SAFETY
• No utilizar andamios y plataformas de trabajo
sin barandillas de seguridad, o zócalos pro-
tectores de caídas de material.
• Los andamios deben ser instalados por personal
debidamente cualificado.

• No deben utilizarse escaleras empalmadas,
graves e incluso mortales.

General rules for using fire extinguishers
Before use
• The fire extinguishers should be in a visible, accessible
place with their corresponding signposting.
• Never hang jackets, coats, umbrellas, etc. on fire
extinguishers.
• Read the technical label about the fire extinguisher
found on it, to find out for which kinds of fire it is
efficient or compatible.
While extinguishing a fire
• Make sure that your intervention can be done safely, without it involv-
ing any risk for you or for other people.
• Verify the kind of fire and use the closest suitable extinguisher to the
fire.
• Take hold of the extinguisher carefully, placing the palm of your hand
below it to stop it from slipping and falling.
• Remove the bolt and aim the flow of the extinguishing agent at the
base of the flames in a zigzag movement.
• Important: Make sure at all times that you have a way out behind
you, and fight the fire in the same direction as its movement. In other
words, with your back to the wind in the exterior and in favour of the
draft in interiors.
• In the case of fire with the presence of electrical voltage, try to cut off
the electrical current or use extinguishers with powder or CO2. Never
use water to put out an electrical fire.
• If you cannot control the outbreak of the fire, notify the fire brigade.
After extinguishing the fire
• Once you have put the fire out, contact your superior, so that the
extinguisher used can be replaced as quickly as possible for another
full one of the same characteristics.
SAFETY

Manipulación manual de cargas
Concepto

Seat
Whether users can do their job with a straight, relaxed
back and their neck in a non-forced posture will depend
on the design of the seat.
Recommendations:
• A chair that is adjustable by height and angle.
• A swivelling chair with five points of support.
• A concave lumbar support that is mobile.
• The seat leaning slightly backwards.
Display monitor
To work with a screen with the minimum risk of suffering changes in
your health, you should be aware of geometric situation, height, angle
and lighting of the workplace.
Recommendations:
Adjust the chair and position of the screen according to the following
parameters:
• Screen set at a height at which its upper edge coincides with the
height of your eyes.
• The distance between the screen and your eyes should be between 45
and 50 cm.
• Support your arms on the surface of the table and keep your elbows
at a 90° angle.
• Keep your wrists relaxed and supported when using the keyboard and
mouse.
• Avoid reflections: to do this, sources of light should be perpendicular
to the screen and at a distance that prevents them shining directly
on it. If it is necessary to regulate the entry of sunlight, use curtains
and/or blinds.
• Knees should be kept at a 90° angle thus facilitating the return of the
blood circulation.
ERGONOMICS

EMERGENCY
First aid
Concept
First Aid is the name given to all the techniques that should be applied to
the victim of an accident in the moments immediately after the accident.
Activation of the emergency system
In the case of any accident, you should remember three key actions
before starting to deal with the victim of the accident: Protect, Request
Help and Offer Help
Action Procedure
For the victim of an accident, the attitude of the lifesaver is decisive.
1. Keep calm.
2. Prevent agglomerations.
3. Do not give the victim food or drink.
4. Do not move the injured person.
5. Examine the injured person.
6. Calm the injured person down.
7. Keep the injured person warm.
8. Inform health staff.
9. Move the victim correctly.
10. Do not give any medication.
Preventative measures
Actions in the case of the most frequent accidents:
Fractures
• Do not move or transfer the injured person if you suspect they have
injured their spine, neck or head.
• Request immediate help from the health staff.
• Keep the head of the victim of the accident within the neck-trunk
axis.
• For other fractures, immobilise the affected area.
EMERGENCIA
Primeros Auxilios
Concepto
1. Conservar la calma.
2. Evitar aglomeraciones.
3. No dar de comer ni de beber.
4. No mover al herido.
5. Examinar al herido.
6. Tranquilizar al herido.
7. Mantener al herido caliente.
8. Avisar al personal sanitario.
9. Traslado adecuado.
10. No medicar.
Medidas preventivas
Actuaciones ante los accidentes más frecuentes:
Fracturas
tebral, cuello o cabeza.
• Solicitar inmediatamente ayuda a personal sanitario.
30. 58 59
Pulse and Breathing
• Loosen belts and ties, undo neck buttons.
• In any case, try to make sure that the victim
of the accident can breathe comfortably.
• If there is respiratory paralysis or if the
pulse has disappeared, do cardiac massage,
but only if you know how to do so, if not,
abstain from doing so.
• In any case, try to make sure that the victim
of the accident can breathe comfortably.
Wounds
• In the case of bleeding wounds, apply a compressive bandage and press
on the wound.
• Transfer the victim to a health centre.
• If you are going to treat wounds, wash your hands very thoroughly. Use
disinfectants and plasters. Use sterilised gloves.
Burns
• For slight burns (other than electrical ones), limit your action to washing
the area with cold water for some minutes and then having the victim
checked by a doctor. Do not apply any substance to the burn and cover
it with a sterile dressing.
• For more serious burns, take the victim of the accident to a health centre
urgently.
• Never removed clothes from the area of the body which has been
burned.
Eyes
• In minor accidents, the first action should be to wash the eyes with
plenty of water for at least 15 minutes and then to go to the doctor; the
eyes should never be rubbed. Do not use eye drops.
EMERGENCY
Pulso y Respiración
• Aflojar cinturones y corbatas, desabro-
No echar colirio.

EMERGENCY
Emergency and evacuation plans
Concept
An emergency plan is that which organises the human and material
resources that should be used to fight an emergency, as well as the way
in which it should be done.
Action Procedure
If you receive the order to evacuate:
• Follow the instructions of the fire-fighting teams.
• Keep calm and do not shout.
• Evacuate quickly but without running. Walk close to the wall.
• Do not go back for personal objects.
• Do not use lifts as a way of evacuating in a fire.
• Close the doors and windows you come across while evacuating.
• If there is a meeting point for emergencies, go there and stay there
until you are told you may go.
• In a smoky environment in which
it is difficult to breathe: get around
by bending down, crawling and if
possible, place a damp handkerchief
over your mouth and nose.
• If your clothing catches fire: do not
run away, but throw yourself on the
floor and roll over and over.
• If you are trapped: cover any cracks
through which smoke could come in
with a damp cloth and do as much as
you can to attract attention until you
have been rescued.
EMERGENCIA
Planes de emergencia y evacuación
Concepto
