48. STUDY NOTES
STUDY COMICS
Método audiovisual y
programado para
practicar y avanzar
■ PAGE 7
"To make someone
jump":
Sobresaltar, dar un susto
a alguien (literalmente,
hacer dar un salto a al
guien).
■ PAGE 15
"To make oneself at
home":
Ponerse cómodo, sentirse
como en casa. Se utiliza
como expresión de cálida
acogida. Con este fin tam-
bién podríamos decir:
make yourself comforta
ble!
"To be right":
Tener razón, estar en lo
cierto (maybe he was
right: quizás tenía razón).
To be wrong: no tener ra
zón, estar equivocado.
Por otro lado, it's
right/wrong: está
bien/mal, incluye, entre
otros valores, apreciación
moral (it's wrong to punish
children).
■ PAGE 21
"To knock": (*)
Golpear. Observa el uso
frecuente de este verbo en
nuestras aventuras. Si
añadimos "down", el sig
nificado es derribar
(knock them down!). Con
"out" la idea es "dejar
fuera de combate" (I
knocked four Romans
out). La forma abreviada
K.O. admite terminacio
nes, pero es una expre
sión coloquial (he k.o.'d
his rival).
m PAGE 26
"To play a practical
joke":
Gastar una broma (pesa
da). Recuerda también to
play an instrument y to
play a game. Observa los
distintos valores de
"play" en cada caso: gas
tar, tocar, jugar, y el uso u
omisión del artículo (she
plays the guitar; he plays
football).
"To make a fool of
someone":(*)
Reírse, burlarse de al
guien (a fool: un tonto).
Recuerda otra expresión
similar (pág. 41): to make
fun of someone, y añáde
la a las expresiones con
"fun" aparecidas en Aste-
rix in Switzerland.
■ PAGE 27
"To have a bite (to
eat)":
Coloquial, tomar un boca
do. Una expresión más
corriente sería to have so
mething to eat.
■ PAGE 29
"To hang around":
(*)
Se suele utilizar en el sen
tido de estar en un sitio sin
un objeto claro, perdien
do el tiempo. Tiene el mis
mo significado que to
hang(a) round (I can't
hang about/(a)round
doing nothing).
■ PAGE 31
"I can't stand it, I
can't bear it":
No puedo aguantarlo, no
puedo soportarlo. Aunque
a veces se pueden usar
con sentido muy parecido
(I can't stand/bear pain:
no puedo aguantar/so-
portar el dolor), stand
suele dar la idea de que
algo nos molesta o fasti
dia, mientras que bear
suele estar asociado al
sentimiento de pena, do
lor. Veamos: / can't stand
that girl, I can't stand her
shouting. I can't bear to
see him suffer (shouting:
gritos; suffer: sufrir). Re
cuerda que detrás de
stand el verbo va en for
ma de "ing", mientras que
bear, además, admite el
infinitivo con "to".
■ PAGE 37
"Te get something
right/wrong":
Entender algo bien/mal
(he gol it all wrong: lo en
tendió mal, no supo inter
pretar la información
correctamente). Compá
ralo con las expresiones
anteriores (pág. 15).

OMISION DE PALABRAS
EN LA ORACION:
1. GENERALIDADES
ought to stay in bed but probably he won't (stay in bed).
Esto es posible en determinados casos. Recordemos, por ejem
plo, lo que ocurre con and, or, but; either... or, neither... nor; al
gunos tipos de oraciones de relativo, etc.
She must wash the dishes and (she must) lay the table.
The book (which/that) you lent me is very interesting.
siones con "there"
(I) wonder where he is: me pregunto dónde estará. Omisión del
sujeto delante de algunos verbos ordinarios.
(I) must go: debo irme. Omisión del sujeto delante de algunos
modales.
(I've) got to go: tengo que irme. Omisión del sujeto y el auxiliar
de "have got".
(He/She) seems interested: Parece Omisión
interesado/a. del sujeto delante de un
(It) looks good: tiene buena pinta. verbo ordinario.
Ade
más de "there" se omite el auxiliar "is".
(You) Had a busy day, did you?: ¿Has tenido un día ocupado,
eh?
sona, aquí "you".

“any". Además del sujeto, que a veces se deja, se omiten los
auxiliares no modales y el verbo to be aunque sea principal.
(Do you) want a coke?: ¿quieres/queréis una cocacola?
(Are you) coming?: ¿vienes/venís?
(Is there) anything wrong? (Aquí “is" no es auxiliar): ¿algo va
mal?
mera y tercera persona. Generalmente se necesita el auxiliar
para formar la negación.
(I) Don't think so: creo que no.
(I) mustn't grumble: no puedo (no debo) quejarme.
(I) haven't seenher: no la he visto.
(I) mustn't seen her: no la he visto.
(He/She) doesn't know a thing: no sabe nada.
(You) can't go in there: no puedes/podéis entrar ahí.
(Will you be) back son?
Pág. 5.
(I'm) just coming.
(I) can't stop. Pág. 10.
(You/We) can't count on it.
Pág. 11.
(Do you) want me to come
with you? Pág. 23.
(You) don't feel so strong
now, eh? Pág. 22.
¿Volverás pronto? ¿De vuelta
pronto?
¿Ha ocurrido algo interesante?
Voy ahora mismo. Observa el
cambio de verbo respecto al espa
ñol (ir: to go; consulta las expre
siones de The Shooting Star).
No puedo pararme.
No puedes/podemos contar con
ello. A veces puede haber más de
una interpretación.
¿Quieres que vaya contigo? Cam
bio de verbo igual que el ejemplo
de arriba.
¿No te sientes tan fuerte ahora,
eh?
tulares y telegramas.
