1. REGION INSULAR
Población
La población de la región insular de Colombia se
puede dividir en tres grupos. El primero de ellos
es conocido como la población raizal. Este grupo
es principalmente de religión protestante y
tradiciones anglo-norteamericanas. Su
ascendencia es fundamentalmente africana.
En segunda instancia, se encuentra el grupo
conformado por la comunidad sirio-libanesa.
Esta comunidad, en términos generales, es muy
cerrada y concentra un gran poder económico.
En tanto, el tercero de los grupos son los
denominados continentales. Estos son mulatos
venidos de los departamentos de Atlántico y
Bolívar.
Por otro lado, la población isleña autóctona ha
sido superada progresivamente por la de los
inmigrantes.
Population
The population of the insular region of Colombia
can be divided into three groups. The first of

También, como complemento a las actividades
turísticas, se practica la agricultura y pesca de
subsistencia.
Economy
The economy of the island region of Colombia is
mainly supported by tourism and commerce

2. Subregiones
Archipiélago de San Andrés, Providencia y Santa
Catalina
Estas islas conforman el departamento del
mismo nombre. El archipiélago está ubicado en
el mar Caribe con una extensión total de 52,2
km².
San Andrés tiene una extensión de 26 km². Por
su parte, Providencia tiene un área de 17 km²,
y la de Santa Catalina es de 1 km².
Isla Gorgona: Es un pequeño sistema de islas
conformado por Gorgona, Gorgonilla y otros tres
islotes. Están ubicadas en el océano Pacífico y
pertenecen al departamento del Cauca con 26
km² de superficie. Allí se encuentra el Parque
Nacional Natural Isla Gorgona.
Malpelo: Esta subregión corresponde al islote
de Malpelo. Este islote es de formación
volcánica. Se encuentra situado en el océano
Pacífico y está bajo la circunscripción del
departamento del Valle del Cauca. Tiene unos
1,20 km² de superficie emergida.
Archipiélago de San Bernardo: Esta
subregión de la región insular de Colombia está
conformada por un conjunto de 10 islas situadas
en el mar Caribe. En total todas tienen una
superficie aproximada de 255 km², y se
encuentran ubicadas en el golfo de Morrosquillo.
Subregions
Archipelago of San Andrés, Providencia and
Santa Catalina
These islands make up the department of the
same name. The archipelago is located in the
Caribbean Sea with a total extension of 52.2
km².
San Andrés has an extension of 26 km². For its

Gorgona Island: It is a small island system

San Bernardo Archipelago: This subregion of
the island region of Colombia is made up of a

3. Festividades
Fiestas patronales de San Andrés
Estas festividades de San Andrés tienen lugar
del 27 al 30 del mes de noviembre. Se realizan
en honor al santo patrono de la isla. En el marco
de estas celebraciones tiene lugar el Carnaval
del Coco.
Festival de la Luna Verde
Esta festividad de la región insular de Colombia
se celebra anualmente entre el 10 y el 17 de
septiembre. Cada año, durante 7 días, se
reúnen todas las expresiones culturales que
conforman la región caribeña.
Es un evento internacional también conocido
como The green moon festival. Todos los años
participan países como Jamaica y Haití.
Este festival se considera un rescate de los
valores culturales y sociales del archipiélago. Allí
dominan ritmos como el calipso, reggae, soca y
otros ritmos que representan la cultura caribe.
Festival del Cangrejo
El Festival del Cangrejo se celebra todos los
años el primero de enero. Ese día, residentes de
la isla de San Andrés y visitantes pueden
saborear diversos platos preparados a base de
este crustáceo. También, durante el evento se
disfrutan de música y bailes de la región.
Holidays
Patron saint festivities of San Andrés
These festivities of San Andrés take place from
November 27 to 30. They are made in honor of
the patron saint of the island. Within the
framework of these celebrations the Carnival of
the Coco takes place.
Green Moon Festival
This holiday in the insular region of Colombia is
celebrated annually between September 10 and
17. Every year, for 7 days, all the cultural
expressions that make up the Caribbean region
meet.
It is an international event also known as “The
green moon festival”. Countries like Jamaica and
Haiti participate every year.
This festival is considered a rescue of the
cultural and social values of the archipelago.

Crab Festival
The Crab Festival is held every year on the first
of January. That day, residents of the island of
San Andres and visitors can savor various dishes

the region.
4. Instrumentos musicales típicos de la
región Insular
El Tube bass o tinajo o bajo tina: Es
considerado como el instrumento más
característico de los ritmos típicos de la región
insular.
Consiste en un cilindro de zinc, con uno de los
extremos tapado con un hueco al centro por
donde pasa un cordel, el cual está tensado
con una vara. El sonido se produce por
vibración de la cuerda.
El Jawbone o quijada: El instrumento
consiste en un hueso de la mandíbula de un
caballo, que se secó al sol y como resultado se
aflojaron sus dientes.
El sonido se produce al golpear la parte ancha
de la mandíbula con el puño, haciendo vibrar
los dientes un sus cavidades; o haciendo
fricción con un palo u otro hueso por los
dientes.
La Maraca: Es un instrumento de percusión
de origen indígena americano. Consiste en un
tarro o esfera rellena de semilla, granos,
pedazos metálicos, piedras o vidrios, que a su
vez es atravesada por un mango.
Al agitarla se produce un sonido cuando el
material dentro golpea las paredes internas de
la esfera. Por lo general se tocan en pareja,
una maraca en cada mano.
La Mandolina o bandolina: Instrumento
musical de 4 cuerdas de origen italiano.
El Violín
Musical instruments typical of the Insular
region
The Tube bass or tinajo or bass tub: It is
considered as the most characteristic
instrument of the typical rhythms of the insular
region.
It consists of a zinc cylinder, with one end
covered with a hole in the center where a
string passes, which is tensioned with a rod.
The sound is produced by string vibration.
The Jawbone or jaw: The instrument
consists of a bone in the jaw of a horse, which
dried in the sun and as a result its teeth were
loosened.
The sound is produced by hitting the wide part
of the jaw with the fist, making the teeth
vibrate in their cavities; or friction with a stick
or other bone through the teeth.
The maraca: It is a percussion instrument of
American Indian origin. It consists of a jar or
sphere filled with seed, grains, metal pieces,
stones or glass, which in turn is pierced by a
handle.
When shaken it produces a sound when the
material inside hits the inner walls of the
sphere. Usually they play in pairs, a maraca in
each hand.

5. Platos típicos principales de la región
insular
1- Rondón o Run down: Es el plato típico de
la región por excelencia. Es una especie de guiso
o sopa que se cocina en una base de leche de
coco.
A esta base se le agregan pescado, caracoles,
ñame, yuca, plátano verde, cola de cerdo y
tortillas de harina, y se sazona con diferentes
especias.
2- Sopa de cangrejo: Es una exquisitez por lo
exótico de sus ingredientes. También es
considerada un poderoso afrodisíaco.
Se prepara con cangrejos negros y rojos, que se
cocinan con cola de cerdo, papa, ñame, tortillas
de harina y especias.
3- Bolas o albóndigas de cangrejo o
pescado: Es un plato muy cotizado en la
región. Se prepara con carne de pescado,
cangrejo o langosta.
4- Cocadas o dulces de coco: El coco es la
fruta más popular de la región y se utiliza en la
preparación de diferentes platos, tanto dulces
como salados.
Main typical dishes of the insular region
1- Rondón or Run down: It is the typical
dish of the region par excellence. It is a kind of
stew or soup that is cooked in a coconut milk
base.
To this base are added fish, snails, yams,
cassava, green plantain, pork tail and flour
tortillas, and seasoned with different spices.
2- Crab soup: It is a delicacy for the exotic
ingredients. It is also considered a powerful
aphrodisiac.
It is prepared with black and red crabs, which
are cooked with pork tail, potatoes, yams, flour
tortillas and spices.
3- Crab balls or meatballs or fish: It is a
highly priced dish in the region. It is prepared
with fish meat, crab or lobster.
4- Cocadas or coconut candies: Coconut is
the most popular fruit in the region and is used
in the preparation of different dishes, both
sweet and savory.
