Fernando Zóbel was born in Manila, 1924, returning to this town with his family during the Spanish Civil War.
He studied Philosophy at Harvard University. He began painting around 1942. One of his main influences is Mark Rothko.
He returned to Spain in 1963 .He began to live and be known in Cuenca, where he founded, with his friend and artist Gustavo Torner, the Museum of Abstract Art in the Hanging Houses. He donated his collection to the Fundación Juan March. He died in Rome, with 58 years in 1984, of a heart attack and was buried in the cemetery of San Isidro in Cuenca.
Zobel’s methods are: First, the difficulty of the choice of color, and its application to the canvas. Furthermore, the use of pastel as a pencil and loosely. As for color, he use black as background color, sienna earth tones and then roasted. He highlights the geometry, and the horizontal line.
Using the grid, transports us into the world of music, much loved by Zobel. The horizontal lines resemble staves, while the vertical are to be interpreted as the role of bar lines. In this sense we could speak of melodic and lyrical painting.
