1. Abstracto
Objetivo.Determinarlaprevalenciade laviolenciaenel noviazgoysuasociaciónconla
depresiónylasconductasde riesgoenuna muestrade estudiantesfemeninasdel estadode
Morelos.Material y Methods.This esunestudiode cohorte de base de unamuestrade 13 293
estudiantesde 12a 24 añosde edadque asistíana las escuelaspúblicasenel estadode
Morelosdurante el añoescolar1998-1999. Los participantesfueronseleccionadosapartirde
una muestraaleatoriade 260 escuelassecundarias,92escuelaspreparatoriasyuna
universidad.A losefectosde este análisis,untotal de 4 587 alumnasque tenía unarelaciónde
noviazgoanteriorfueronde control selected.Toporposiblesvariablesde confusión,se utilizó
el análisisde regresiónlogísticamúltiple.Resultados.Laprevalenciatotal de violenciade
parejaenmujeresque asistieronalasescuelaspúblicasde Morelosfue de 28% .Los siguientes
variablesse asociaronconla violenciaenel noviazgo:depresión(OR=1,92, IC 95% 1,61 a
2,28); el consumode tabaco (OR= 1,31, IC 95% 1,06 a 1,60); abusode alcohol (OR= 1,30, 95%
IC 1.12- 1.51); bajo rendimientoacadémico(bajascalificaciones) (OR=1,25, IC 95% 1,03 a
1,52); unahistoriade las relacionessexuales(OR=1,52; IC 95% 1.26- 1.82). Conclusions.The
resultadosde este estudioindicanclaramente que lasmujeressufrenviolenciade pareja
desde lasrelacionesde noviazgo.Saludyeducaciónprofesionalesnecesitanestablecer
estrategiasde intervenciónparaprevenirotratar laviolenciaenel noviazgoentre las
estudiantes.Estasestrategiasdebentenerencuentalarelaciónentre ladepresiónyla
violencia,asícomootroscomportamientosde riesgorelacionados.

Abstract
Objective.Determine the prevalence of datingviolenceanditsassociationwithdepressionand
variousriskbehaviorsinasample of female studentsfromthe state of Morelos.Material and
Methods.Thisisabaseline cohortstudyof a sample of 13 293 studentsfrom12 to 24 yearsof
age whoattendedpublicschoolsinthe state of Morelosduringthe 1998-1999 school year.
The participantswere selectedfromarandomsample of 260 juniorhighschools,92 high
schoolsandone university.Forthe purpose of thisanalysis,atotal of 4 587 female students
whohad a previousdatingrelationshipwere selected.Tocontrol forpossibleconfounding
variables,multiple logisticregressionanalysiswasused.Results.The total prevalence of dating
violence infemaleswhoattendedpublicschoolsinMoreloswas28%.The followingvariables
were associatedwithdatingviolence:depression(OR=1.92; 95% CI 1.61-2.28); tobacco
smoking(OR=1.31; 95% CI 1.06-1.60); alcohol abuse (OR=1.30, 95% CI1.12- 1.51); poor
academicperformance (lowgrades) (OR=1.25;95% CI 1.03-1.52); a historyof sexual relations
(OR= 1.52; 95% CI 1.26- 1.82). Conclusions.The resultsof this studyclearlyindicate thatwomen
experience partnerviolence beginningwithdatingduringadolescence.Healthandeducation
professionalsneedtoestablishinterventionstrategiestopreventortreatdatingviolence
amongfemale students.Suchstrategies shouldtake intoaccountthe associationbetween
depressionandviolence,aswell asotherrelatedriskbehaviors.

The study of violence indatingrelationshipsisimportantfor three reasons:first,ithasbeen
found
that physical aggressionbefore marriage isindicative of a51% probabilitythatthisaggression
will
be repeatedthroughoutthe firstyearanda half of cohabitation.Second,the studyof violence
can
aidin understandingthe phenomenonof violence inintimaterelationships.Finally,knowledge
aboutthisphenomenonmayhelptoplanandpromote prevention.Moreover,the studyof
dating
violence hashistoricallyfocusedonwomen,yet,recentresearchsuggeststhat,at leastin
dating
couples,the gendergapisdecreasingorevenreversing.Thisstudypresentsdataaboutdating
violence fromasurveyof 140 youngmenand womeninTamaulipas,Mexico.The results
indicate
3. that 45.5% of menand 46.8% of women, correspondingto46.2% of the sample as a whole,
suffer
fromviolence tosome degree,butthere were nosignificantgenderdifferencesinthisregard.
