SUMMARY
This artistic and experimental project has the purpose of obtaining
readings from the possible relationship between the territory, the
geographical (public) space and a (museability) museum
capabilities. For this purpose, several field works were performed
when travelling to the town of El Molino, located in the Pueblos
del Sur (Southern Towns) of the State of Merida. There, with the
participation of the community, we performed 7 interventions
geographically distributed into 3 of the valleys surrounding the
town and it is located at the intersection.
Interventions were made in different geographical and cultural
spaces which offer physical and visual access surrounding the
town and its center, by making use of some of its buildings.
Resources shared with areas selected were used there. Daily,
known geographical, human and material resources charged with
intimate significance of the place and its history.
The approach to the territory is made from the political,
geographical and cultural point of view considering the spatial,
regional and social level confined to the landscape, with the
intention of finding in them the definition of the “museum
piece” within the “public space” as regards the research,
education, recording and collection. All interventions were
recorded and documented in photographs, audios and videos in
order to expand the temporary experience through
representation devices.

DESCRIPTION
The 7 interventions made at El Molino, were performed in 3
consecutive periods of 1 month each with different waiting
periods between them during 1 year, from 2017 to 2018; they
are numbered in the same order they were carried out and
with the title assigned to each of them, which tries to reflect
the expressive nature of the meaning of the work, as part of
something experimental.
Interventions in town spaces, now seen from the geo-cultural
perspective, began with the intention of taking over the town
both physically and symbolically – within the formulation of
temporary artistic forms, capable of bursting into the daily
landscape in a determining manner with the resources of the
place – because the interventions were conceived as an
intrusion, with “colonizing” and “artistization” intentions, by an
individual from another territory seen as a bearer of the
possibilities of changing the environment that generates
conflict and doubt, so as to identify the notion of geographical
territorial place, with the charge of a transforming intrusion,
where the natural, social and cultural level is seen interwoven
between them, amongst the relationships agreed with the
dwellers.

To that effect, there was a strategic initiation of the tasks pro-
posed in the field of negotiations, where the artist acts as an
ethnographer that has access to the community with the intention
of having empathy with the other and from there, conversations
begin with some community members, such as: the church priest,
the school director, the farmers, the land owner, the grocer, the
policeman, the architect, the town’s builder, the cook, the
innkeeper, all for the purpose of getting closer, to know and
establish the pertinent relationships with which to understand
their rituals, their production processes and their educational
scope, for the best achievement of the project.
INTERVENTIONS
Initially, interventions were going to be made in a specific place
from where one of the 3 valleys is observed and which can be
seen from the main road that gives access to it (where the first
intervention was made); however, during the process of approach
and empathy with the community, the initial place was extended
until the achievement of the seven interventions that determine
the proposal.
Intervention 1: “The White Rocks”, consists of a group
and organization of a family of white rocks typical from the place,
that emerge from the veins found in the mountain and the rivers
that drags them and this individually stands out in the geography
by contrast with the rounded grey stones that are also typical from
the area. They were located in mountain folds different from the
traditional ones which resulted in the preparation and visibility of a
geometry and an order different from the natural one, that
consequently marks a differentiation in the landscape and turns it
into a sort of archive that re-orders and re-classifies a specific
material.

Intervention 2: “Tribute to the Cow”, is the con-
sequence of finding the bones of a cow that took place while we
were searching for the white rocks. This invites us to con- sider the
definitions of the place that arises from its own histo- riography, so
as to perceive its possibilities of alteration from a symbolic sphere,
confined within the fluidity of the space between life and death, of
change and transformation.
“Tribute to the Cow” is composed by the classification and
distribution of the bones of a cow inside a stream, both (bones and
flowing) placed as elements that seem contradic- tory although
they are not, one hard and stiff within the other, soft, flexible, of
existence and future, giving a significance to the territorial space,
interpreting the cow as correspondence in its existence in the
place, that works for evidencing differ- entiated spaces, subtly
intervened in order to achieve in it another significance.

Intervention 3: “Drawing in the Onion”, is
expressed as a gentle welcome to El Molino landscape. It is seen
from the main road that gives access to the town. This
intervention was thought from ethnological and anthropological
definitions, with artistic and graphical intentions, designated by
the design of geometrical shapes resulting from the process of
plowing that slightly differs from the shapes traditionally left by
the shapes traditionally made in planting.
In “Drawing in the Onion” the plowing of the land was made
with oxen in a different way (in the shape of a fan or radial) to the
traditional one (in a parallel way) and the same was made
completely operational, which suggests the achievement of a
new design of an essential act, a slight modification of an ancient
agricultural tradition. Additionally, the work saw the limitation
given about territoriality in the conceptual field and allowed to
see in depth the concepts and definitions of artistic expression
techniques, such as drawing and painting and how they can be
transferred to other extended contexts, in their application to a
topography.

Intervention 4: “Ode to Persephone”, is given by a series
of specifications that break with the natural geometry of the terrain,
the presence of which is also expressed by its exten- sion, because it is
within a space with dimensions similar to those of a football field
located next to a greenhouse. Spaces among which there is a
geometrical link, and at the same time a history about technological
agricultural culture. It is the only intervention which imposes a shape
from another geography. It was per- formed during the week of
celebration of San Isidro Labrador (Saint Isidore the Laborer), a Catholic
town tradition which is held to thank for the beginning of the rainy
season, and the name of the work establishes an analogy with the
Greek myth about the Abduction of Persephone, the relationship with
her mother Demeter, and the change of the different seasons of the
year.
“Ode to Persephone” refers to two expressive glances: the first one
determined by the geometrical abstract from the reinterpre- tation of a
previous work named “Sol” (Sun) (2015) (exhibited at the Alejandro
Otero Museum in Caracas - Venezuela. ) which in the “Ode” acquires
new significant dimensions because the draw- ing of the upper part of
the work is reflected on the ground, trans- forming it into a new field of
materialization and presentation.
The second one is expressed in the extended glance of the inter-
vention, made with a tractor on an area of cultivation where a wheat
and beetroot plantation had been recently harvested and in that
action, the intervention transforms its useful significance, in addition to
being a device that allows to see if the way the community recognizes
itself with the place can be changed and this is why Saint Isidore’s Day,
the “Ode”, worked as a call center.
At the end of the day, a bonfire was lit at the center of the inter-
vention and there was an additional turn to rituals.

Intervention 5: “The First Public Spitting Place
of El Molino”, its name is provided by those that
contributed to its performance; it intends to be an archive that
results from the physical record of a custom that dwellers have,
which captures spits of “chimo” (cooked tobacco paste with salt
that is chewed and spitted) in a canvas, which ended with the
appearance showed. The work is a custom of the town in a
collective painting work and at the same time, they are
reflections about the use of public spaces of the community,
among which are, the habit of consuming “Chimo” as part of
their identity and the suitability of the proper places to do so, as
well as the scope of the appropriation of the space by its
dwellers: It resulted in a system of artistic geo-cultural
measurement where aesthetic considerations were observed
over the space, because the spits define and affect the grounds
in public places and the roads used by passersby.
The entire action was recorded in a 1.5 mts x 7.0 mts canvas, that
was placed in the fence next to the church and in front of a
business place where bank transfers are made, use of the
internet, selling of food and detergent is made.

Intervention 6: “Tomb for the Living”, determined in
the ironic significance of the other that has access to a community
with already established identity patters and that deals with the
sociological field. “Tomb for the Living” consisted in a Catholic altar
for funeral use where the dedication to an occupant is implied,
another stranger that breaks into one part of the land/territory
pertaining to El Molino Documentary Center. The Center is a non
for profit institution created and built as a wall (a local traditional
construction system) by a journalist and an architect dedicated to
document and spread the customs of the place and also the
creation of printed and audio-visual information media. It was
founded 35 years ago and since then, it has provided services to
the community; however, they will also be referred to as the
others. So it is an invasion of another invasion.

Intervention 7: “The Cinema”, it results from the change
of use of the Catholic church of the town, to a place that will be
conceived as a projection place, a cinema. The temporary de-
consecration of the religious monument and also of the town. A
change and transformation that will take place when a screen is
placed in the altar where an Uruguayan movie written and directed
by Cesar Charlone and Enrique Fernandez named “The Pope’s
Bath” was projected and showed the variability of the spaces of
common use amidst a new determination of calling to them and of
the operations of identification of spaces in their significance.
All the interventions made in the place were recorded in pho-
tographs and videos expanding their visibility towards other
visualization spaces. The records resulting in each format
(photographic and video) have been identified with a specific
number, matching each intervention, all that for the purpose of
generating discussion lines that will allow us to represent the
territory from different points of view: cultural, geographi- cal,
topographical, geological or biological, with the intention of
finding out about the possible relationship between the natural,
cultural, between matter and meaning, between spiri- tual and
tangible, between historical and the specifically artis- tic and
human level.

41. ACCIONES ADICIONALES
ADDITIONAL ACTIONS
The intention of our El Molino: Temporary Museo Project,
generated additional actions of approach and familiarity with the
environment. Those additional actions were as follows:
a) Lecture to students in the 2nd. Year of the Diversified School,
where we differentiated art from design. We spoke about
contemporary art and we explained the process of performing the
work “Ode to Persephone”; at the same time, we made a de-
contextualization exercise with the furniture used in the class
room in order to turn it into a relational sculpture facility.
b) The attending teacher were invited to watch the documentary
film “Exit Through the Gift Shop” in order to bring them closer to
my objectives and purposes of making a documentary at El Molino
about the interventions performed.
c) A conservatorship was made of a sample by the artist Marquelis,
who settled at El Molino together with a group of individuals who
emigrated from the capital to create the Documentary Center. He
is their neighbour Meanwhile, an exhibition at the grocery store
was made by placing in front of it “The First Public Spitting Place
of El Molino”, where several black and white prints over a tabloid-
size craft paper of the picture selection made by the founding
architect of the Alejandro Gonzalez Documentary Center were
exhibited. All of them were about the building process, the wall
used for it. Likewise, a selection of slides with comments by the
author were exhibited.

Additionally to these activities, the performance of photo-
graphical and video records that were not planned at the time
and in the same place where the records of the interventions
related to the physical space were made, but all of them are not
necessarily in the same way because some of them are related
only with the concept and refer to a personal glance of the artist.
