2. CAN
• Se usa para decir que tenemos la habilidad de hacer algo:
- Peter can eat lots of food
• Can sólo puede usarse en presente
• Para usar can en futuro o present perfect usaremos
distintas expresiones, dependiendo de si queremos
expresar habilidad o permiso
- I will be able to speak Chinese after I finish my
course
- I have been allowed to arrive home after 12 o´clock
since I was 15 years old.
• La forma negativa es cannot o can´t
( expresamos algo q estamos 100% seguros de q es
imposible)
3. COULD
• Expresar que teníamos la habilidad de hacer algo:
- I could speak German when I was younger
• Expresar que teníamos el premiso de hacer algo:
- I could enter that room when I was working here
• También se puede usar cuando queremos hacer
preguntas o pedir algo en un registro más formal:
- Could I get in?
• Expresar que existe una cierta posibilidad de que
algo ocurra, pero no estamos totalmente seguros:
- La forma negativa de could es couldn´t
4. HAVE TO
• Se utiliza para describir obligaciones en
presente
- I have to be at school at half past eight
- I don´t have to wear a uniform
• La forma afirmativa indica que alguien está
obligado a hacer algo
• Had to y didn´t have to se utilizan para
describir obligaciones en pasado
- My dad had to catch the train to London
at six o´clock this morning
5. MUST
• Es un modal que se utiliza para expresar
obligación
- I must tidy my room
• También se usa para decir que estamos casi
completamente seguros(99%) de que algo es
cierto
- Sarah has been running for 3 hours, she must
be tired.
• Se utiliza en presente y para el resto de tiempos
verbales utilizaremos la expresión have to
• La forma negativa es mustn´t
6. May/Might
• Se pueden usar indistintamente
• Expresan posibilidad, no estamos seguros de que algo sea
cierto
- Don´t call them now, they might be sleeping.
• También se pueden utilizar para expresar posibilidad futura:
- They may give us a 10% discount
• En preguntas se usan para pedir permiso en un registro
formal
- May I have another cup of tea?
• La forma negativa:
- May not
- Might not
7. WILL
Will es un verbo modal que ayuda al verbo
principal de la oración a dar un matiz (de
futuro), va seguido de infinitivo sin el To (bare
infinite) y no lleva –s en la tercera persona del
singular.
La forma contraída es ‘ll y la forma negativa es
will not o won´t
Para hacer una pregunta pondremos primero el
auxiliar, después el sujeto, seguido del verbo
principal y el resto de los elementos que
forman la oración.
8. USOS:
• Lo usamos cuando decidimos algo en el momento en el
que estamos hablando (una decisión instantánea):
-Did you phone Lucy?I forgot.I’ll phone her now
• Predecir el futuro:
-My father will be fifty years old in the year 2018
• Un ofrecimiento:
- That bag looks heavy.I’ll help you with it.
• Mostramos nuestra conformidad para hacer algo
• Promesas:
-I won’t tell anyone what happened. I promise
• Cuando le pedimos a alguien que haga algo
