1. “MODAL VERBS”
En la Gramática Española no tenemos un apartado especial para estudiar estos verbos ya
que funcionan como el resto de nuestros verbos; pero en inglés sí que hacen hincapié en
ellos ya que en la Gramática Inglesa sí tienen “características especiales”.
1) El INFINITIVO que les sigue no va precedido de “to” a excepción del OUGHT to.
2) En PRESENTE de Indicativo la 3ª persona del SINGULAR no añade “s”.
3) Para formar sus formas NEGATIVA e INTERROGATIVA no utilizan ni “DO – DOES”
en Presente ni “DID” en pasado.
4) En frases NEGATIVAS pueden formar “contracciones” con la negación “not”.
5) Por todo lo anterior mencionado se podría concluir que los “modal verbs” –
a excepción de “ought to” - en inglés funcionan como los verbos AUXILIARES ingleses-
“to BE & to HAVE”.
6) Hablando de HABILIDADES y para dar o pedir PERMISO usan los verbos:

7) PROHIBICIÓN – OBLIGACIÓN – NECESIDAD.

HAD to Pasado (de “must”) He had to leave the classroom.
NEED Negativa e Interrogativa She needn’t come if she doesn’t want to.
NEED to Afirmativa Politicians need to find solutions against wars.
SHOULD Potencial You should pay all your debts.
OUGHT to Condicional Some drivers ought to be less aggressive or prouds.
8) POSIBILIDAD – DEDUCCIÓN – ESPECULACIÓN.

MIGHT Pasado - “Futuro” It might snow tomorrow!
CAN Presente - “Futuro” We can meet the day after tomorrow.

CAN’T Presente – “Futuro” I can’t help you tomorrow because I am very busy.
