Think Everything Through its End
Adolfo Bioy Casares (1914-1999)is a worthy representative of Argentinian writings in the context
of fantastic literature, in which several authors from the tradition of River Plate have stood out. Bioy
Casares, heir to Jorge Luis Borges (1899-1986), followsthe line of reflection on issues that involvethe
existence of being, for example, the subject of death, which is of great interest to Bioy Casares. In
1940 AdolfoBioyCasarespublished thenovelThe Invention of Morel, his firstbook, on the condition
author’s decision to deny his previous books is respected. In the same year, along with Jorge Luis
Borges and Silvina Ocampo, the Argentinian released Antología de la literature fantástica (The
Anthology of Fantastic Literature) which, obviously, reveals the literary tastes and affinities of the
compilers. Bioy Casares assumes responsibility for the prologue, a text that is also the expression of
the poetics that distinguishes his narrative production. Since, the literary relationship he establishes
with Borges is also notorious, it can be seen in the works written jointly and in the mutual readings
and interpretations that they exchanged in their books.
The prologue by Jorge Luis Borges is written from the friendship between the renowned
Argentinian writer and his countryman Bioy Casares. And this text represents an important statement
for a respectedauthor. This statementvaluesthework of Casares, whichundoubtedly marksa starting
point in Latin American Literature. In the first place, it expresses the essence of the novel as a type of
adventure narrative, through the intellectual order. Secondly, he mentions famous intellectuals, for
example: the renowned Scottish novelist Stevenson, and the no less famous Spanish philosopher
Ortega y Gasset. From the years of 1882, in the case of the critic Stevenson, and 1925 with Ortega y
Gasset, readers were reluctant to recognize novels that were of an adventurous tone. As the prologue
indicates, these readers inclined their tastes towards the psychological novel. It should be noted that
in those years, including the forties, authors such as Balzac, Proust, De Quincey, Chesterton, Dante,
2. Henry James, Kafka and León Bloy, among others, suffered, in the words of Borges, a division
between good and bad authors. What matters to us is to recognize the adventure story. Borges, even
in a trial full of irony and sarcasm, speaks of the psychological novel to be avoided, and recognizes
the priceless value of the adventure novel (Bioy Casares1982, 85).
In Borges there is a sense of appreciation for empirical characters. That is to say, in the middle of
the 20thcentury, thepubliccomplains aboutthe inabilityof authorsto weaveplotsthatare interesting.
For this reason, Borges enhances the way in which Bioy Casares approaches the narrative. The praise
he attracts encompasses elevates him in his role as a writer, mentioning works such as The Turn of
the Screw, Der Prozess and Le Voyageur sur la terre. The prologue justifies at plot full of mystery, in
additionto the novelby Bioy Casaresthatillustratesreasonablefacts. Toachievethisreality, heutilizes
symbols, and allusionthrough illusionsleadtheavidreader to plots thatcirculateinfantasticnarratives.
This term is not the equivalent of the supernatural. Borges refers to theories that are fully inserted in
the concept of science fiction. My interest in reading The Invention of Morel lies in my preference to
take a critical look at the scientific factor that occupies in many of its pages, the story of Morel’s
memoirs. This is a story that seems reasonable to me from the point of view of science fiction today.
Finally, Borges affirms that the work of Bioy Casares recreates a new genre in the world of literature.
In his words, he considers that this novel is, without a doubt, the perfect work. (Bioy Casares 1982,
86)
Piensa Todo Hasta Su Final
(Bioy Casares 1982, 86)
