Spanish words have stress, which means you emphasise one syllable of a word over
another. Here’s a rule of thumb: when a written word ends in n, s or a vowel, the
stress falls on the second-last syllable. Otherwise, the final syllable is stressed. If you
see an accent mark over a syllable, it cancels out this rule and you just stress that
syllable instead. You needn’t worry about this though, as the stressed syllables are
always italicised in our pronunciation guides .

consonant sounds
Remember that in Spanish the letter h is never pronounced. The Spanish v sounds
more like a b, said with the lips pressed together. When ending a word, d is pronounced soft, like a th, or it’s so slight it doesn’t get pronounced at all. Finally, try to
roll your r’s, especially at the start of a word and in words with rr.
