Se describe el sistema legal de unidades del Perú, las incertidumbres asociadas con los procesos de medición, el concepto de cifra significativa, las reglas en las operaciones de cantidades medidas y la propagación de la incertidumbre.
Muchas de las decisiones tomadas en ingeniería se basan en resultados de medidas experimentales, por lo tanto es muy importante expresar dichos resultados con claridad y precisión. Los conceptos de magnitud física, unidades y medida se han estudiado en la primera lección de Fundamentos Físicos de la Informática y, como complemento, en este capítulo se pretende aprender a estimar los posibles errores en las medidas, así como la propagación de estos errores a través de los cálculos a los resultados, a expresar los resultados y a analizarlos. Dado que los contenidos de esta asignatura son fundamentalmente electricidad y magnetismo, en este curso haremos más hincapié en las medidas de magnitudes eléctricas.
Hay otros parámetros para cuantificar errores y expresar resultados de las medidas, basados en conceptos estadísticos, que no se tratarán en esta asignatura, pero que son igualmente importantes.

Al medir un objeto debemos tomar en cuenta el siguiente orden:
1. La precisión del instrumento
2. La incertidumbre del instrumento

Precisión 𝜹
Es el valor más pequeño de una magnitud que se puede medir con exactitud por medio de
un instrumento de medida.
Error o incertidumbre de una medida 𝝈
La incertidumbre de la medición es una medida de la dispersión aleatoria del resultado de la
medición y, por tanto, se indica con + /-. Lo podemos obtener dividiendo la precisión entre 2.
