16. What makes these verbs, phrasal verbs? Can you explain, what phrasal
verbs are?
Phrasal verbs have two or more parts. A verb like come, turn, get or pop,
and one or more particles like along, up, on, or around.
Some Phrasal Verbs exist as set Phrases, like "be dying for". You can
argue that it isn't really a Phrasal Verb, but it behaves like one. So, we
included it here.
Most importantly a Phrasal Verbs has only one meaning. The Verb and
the Particle don't have independent meaning. For example: In the verb
"Turn up", the words "Turn" and "Up" don't have a separate meaning.
The verb has two parts, but one meaning.
What does "Turns Up" mean, anyway?
17. ¿Qué hace que estos verbos sean Verbos Compuestos? ¿Puedes explicar
qué son los Verbos Compuestos?
Los Verbos Compuestos tienen dos o más partes. Un verbo como venir-
(come), girar-(turn), llegar-(get) o estallar(pop) , y una o más partículas
como a lo largo-(along), arriba-(up), encima-(on) o alrededor-(around).
Lo más importante es que los Verbos Compuestos tiene un solo
significado. El Verbo y la Partícula no tienen significados independientes.
Por ejemplo: En el verbo "Turn up", las palabras "Turn" y "Up" no tienen
un significado separado. El verbo tiene dos partes, pero un significado.
¿Qué significa "aparece” (Turn Up), de todos modos?
18. It means to arrive or appear. It's a very common verb you could use in
your spoken English. Also, the meaning of a phrasal verb can be totally
different from the meaning of the words which is made from. For
example, "turn up" has no connection with the basic meaning of "turn".
Finally, many phrasal verbs have more than one meaning. Often, the
two or sometimes three meanings are completely separate. With "turn
up", you could also use, "turn up" the radio, the TV, or the volume on
this session, if you want to make it louder. So, now you know some
basic information about phrasal verbs. But what makes phrasal verbs
different from normal verbs.
19. Significa llegar o aparecer. Es un verbo muy común en inglés hablado.
Además, el significado de los Verbos Compuestos puede ser totalmente
diferente del significado de las palabras que lo componen. Por ejemplo,
”turn-up (aparecerse)" no tiene conexión con el significado básico de
”turn-(girar), on-(encima)".
Many English phrasal verbs have the same meaning as another normal one-word
verb. For example, turn up = booster, head off = leave, exit, pick up = grab.
- turn up – , increase, arrive
- head off – leave, exit
- pick up – grab, buy/collect
21. Other phrasal verbs have a unique meaning, for example, run out of,
stop by, or pop out, can't be replaced with just one with the exact same
meaning.
Let's practice. Here are five phrasal verbs and six one-word verbs. Can
you match the phrasal verbs to the one-word verbs with the same
meaning? Be careful, because there's one extra verb which you don't
need. Take three minutes to fill out.
- look for. - install o spend
- go on. - invent
- put in. - continue
- fill in - seek
- make up. - complete
22. Otros Verbos Compuestos tienen un significado único, por ejemplo, quedarse
sin (run out of), pasar (stop by) o salir (pop out) , no se puede reemplazar con
un solo o mismo significado exacto.
Vamos a practicar. Aquí hay cinco Verbos Compuestos. ¿Puedes relacionar los
Verbos Compuestos los verbos de una palabra con el mismo significado?
Tenga cuidado, porque hay un verbo adicional que no necesita. Tome tres
minutos para completar.
1. look for a. install
2. go on b. invent
3. put in c. continue
4. fill in d. seek
5. make up e. complete
23. Ready? Here are the answers.
- look for -> seek
- go on -> continue
- put in -> install
fill in -> complete
make up -> invent
Even here you need to be careful. First, the phrasal verbs and the one-
word might not be exactly the same. For example, what does install
mean? what things can you install? You can install household goods, like
a washing machine, so an air conditioner. You can also install software
on your computer, or on your phone.
24. Listo? Aquí están las respuestas.
1. look for -> d. seek
2. go on -> c. continue
3. put in -> a. install
4. fill in -> e. complete
5. make up -> b. invent
Incluso aquí debes tener cuidado. Primero, es posible que los Verbos
Compuestos y la palabra única no sean exactamente lo mismo. Por
ejemplo, ¿qué significa instalar? ¿Qué cosas puedes instalar? puede
instalar artículos para el hogar, como una lavadora, también un aire
acondicionado. También puede instalar software en su computadora o en
su teléfono.
25. The phrasal verb, "put in", only has the first idea. You can put in a new
washing machine and you can't put in a new app or putting a new
operating system. Secondly, the phrasal verb and the one-word verb
often have different registers. What does that mean? It means they're
used and very different situation. Let's see why this matter.
26. El Verbo Compuesto, "poner (Put In)", solo tiene la primera idea. Puede
instalar una nueva lavadora y no se puede utilizar este verbo compuesto
para - instalar una nueva aplicación o poner un nuevo sistema operativo-
. En segundo lugar, el Verbo Compuesto y el verbo de una palabra suelen
tener registros diferentes. Qué significa eso? Significa que están usados y
una situación muy diferente. Veamos por qué esto importa.
27. David: Hola Raquel, me alegra que pudieras asistir.
Raquel: Lamento llegar tan tarde. Abordé el autobús equivocado y
luego estuve preguntándome durante años buscando tu calle.
David: No te preocupes por eso.
Raquel: ¿Debería quitarme los zapatos?
David: si no te importa. ¿Quieres algo de beber antes de partir?
¿Te Cafe?
28. David: Hi Raquel, I'm glad you can come along.
Raquel: I'm sorry for turning up so late. I got on the wrong bus and then I
was wandering around for ages looking for your street.
David: Don't worry about it.
Raquel: should I take my shoes off?
David: If you don't mind. Would you like something to drink before we
head off? Tea, coffee ...
Raquel: I'm dying for a cup of coffee.
29. David: Hi Raquel, I'm glad you could attend.
Raquel: I'm sorry for appearing so late. I boarded the wrong bus
and then I was wondering for ages seeking your street.
David: Don't worry about it.
Raquel: Should I remove my shoes?
David: if you don't mind. Would you like something to drink before
we depart? Tea, coffee?
30. That was part of the same dialogue you heard before. How was it
different? Did it sound natural to you? This time we used one-word
verbs instead of phrasal verbs in many places. I hope you heard the
dialogue sounded very strange and unnatural. For example, a native
speaker would almost never say sentences like these:
- Glad you could attend!
- Sorry for appearing so late.
- I boarded the wrong bus.
- I was seeking your street.
- Should I remove my shoes?
- Would you like something to drink before we depart?
32. The one word-verbs are too formal and they aren't used in simple
spoken English, like this. You need to use the phrasal verbs. Even
when phrasal verbs and one-word verbs have the same meaning, you
can't always use them in the same way. "Look for" and "Seek" have
the same meaning. But, "Seek" is much more formal and literally. You
wouldn't use it often in conversational English.
33. Los verbos de una palabra son demasiado formales y no se
usan en un inglés hablado simple, como este. Necesitas usar los
Verbos Compuestos. Incluso cuando los Verbos Compuestos y
los verbos de una palabra tienen el mismo significado, no
siempre puedes usarlos de la misma manera. ”look for" y
”seek" tienen el mismo significado. Pero, ”seek (Buscar)" es
mucho más formal y literal. No lo usaría a menudo en inglés
conversacional.
34. So, in spoken English, you often need to use phrasal verbs to sound
natural. On the other hand, because many phrasal verbs are more
informal, they aren't appropriate in formal writing. That said, many
English Learners think that all phrasal verbs are informal; that isn't
true. Phrasal verbs can be more formal or informal like any other
words.
35. Entonces, en inglés hablado, a menudo necesitas usar Verbos
Compuestos para que suene natural. Por otro lado, debido a
que muchos verbos compuestos son más informales, no son
apropiados en la escritura formal. Dicho esto, muchos
estudiantes de inglés piensan que todos los Verbos
Compuestos son informales; eso no es cierto. Los Verbos
Compuestos pueden ser más formales o informales como
cualquier otra palabra.
36. For example, "pop-out" is very informal. You probably wouldn't use
it in written English. "Look for" has a neutral tone meaning, you can
use it in any situation. Some phrasal verbs like "draw upon" even
sound quite formal.
37. Por ejemplo, "pop-out" es muy informal. Probablemente no lo
usaría en inglés escrito. "look for" tiene un significado de tono
neutro, puedes usarlo en cualquier situación. Algunos Verbos
Compuestos como "draw upon-(aprovechar)" incluso suenan
bastante formales.
38. However, when you have a phrasal verb and a one-word verb
with the same meaning, like "turn up" and "arrive", the one-
word verb is generally more formal than the phrasal verb. Now,
you should know what phrasal verbs are, how they're different
from normal verbs, and when you should use phrasal verb.
Next let's turn to a very interesting question. How can you
remember phrasal verbs?
39. Sin embargo, cuando tiene un verbo compuesto y un verbo de
una palabra con el mismo significado, como ”turn up" y ”arrive",
el verbo compuesto por una palabra es generalmente más formal
que el verbo compuesto. Ahora, debes saber qué son los phrasal
verbs, en qué se diferencian de los verbos normales y cuándo
debes usar phrasal verb. A continuación, pasemos a una pregunta
muy interesante. ¿Cómo puedes recordar los phrasal verbs?
40.
41. PART THREE. How to remember phrasal verbs using prepositions.
We said, before that the meaning of a phrasal verb often has no
connection to the words which it's made from. For example, if you
look up a new word in the dictionary, there's no direct connection
to the meaning of "UP". However, prepositions and phrasal verbs
aren't totally random. Often the same preposition in different
phrasal verbs has a similar meaning. Look at three verbs, "Go
Down", "Cut down", "Turn Down". The preposition "Down", has a
similar meaning in these three verbs.
42. PARTE TRES. Cómo recordar phrasal verbs usando preposiciones.
Antes dijimos que el significado de un phrasal verb a menudo no
tiene conexión con las palabras de las que está hecho. Por
ejemplo, si busca una palabra nueva en el diccionario, no hay
conexión directa con el significado de "UP". Sin embargo, las
preposiciones y los phrasal verbs no son totalmente aleatorios. A
menudo, la misma preposición en diferentes phrasal verbs tiene
un significado similar. Mira tres verbos, "Go Down", "Cut Down",
"Turn Down". La preposición "Down-(abajo. Hacia abajo, para
abajo) ", tiene un significado similar en estos tres verbos.
43. Do you know what connects them?
Perhaps it would be clearer if you see them in full sentences.
a. "Sales went down by 15% last year".
b. "I'm trying to cut down on how much coffee I drink."
c. "Can you turn volume down, it's too loud.
44. ¿Sabes qué los conecta?
Quizás sea más claro si los ve en oraciones completas.
a. "Las ventas bajaron un 15% el año pasado".
si. "Estoy tratando de reducir la cantidad de café que bebo".
C. "¿Puedes bajar el volumen? Está demasiado alto.
a. "Sales went down by 15% last year".
b. "I'm trying to cut down on how much coffee I drink."
c. "Can you turn volume down, it's too loud.
¿Puedes ver la conexión ahora?
45. Can you see the connection now?
In these phrasal verbs, “Down" has the idea of something
decreasing. Let's look at another example. Here are three
sentences:
a. "He sent out hundreds of job applications".
b. "They handed out immigration forms before we landed."
c. "The teacher gave out the worksheets."
These sentences contain phrasal verbs with the prepositions,
"Out".
Can you see what connects them?
46. ¿Puedes ver la conexión ahora?
En estos Verbos Compuestos, la palabra "Down" tiene la idea de
algo decreciente. Veamos otro ejemplo. Aquí hay tres oraciones:
a. "Envió cientos de solicitudes de empleo".
segundo. "Repartieron formularios de inmigración antes de
aterrizar".
C. "El maestro repartió las hojas de trabajo".
Estas oraciones contienen phrasal verbs con las preposiciones
"Out".
¿Puedes ver lo que los conecta?
47. These three phrasal verbs, "Send Out", "Hand Out" and "Give
out", all have the idea, to many people, at one time. If he
sent out hundreds of job applications, then he sent many job
applications too many different people at one time. If the
teacher gave out the worksheets, then she gave out many
worksheets, too many students at one time. Again, you can
see how one preposition can have a similar meaning in
different phrasal verbs. Learning more about prepositions
and how they are used in phrasal verbs; can help you to
make connections like these and remember phrasal verbs
more easily. Let's see one more practical tip to help you learn
and remember English Phrasal verbs.
49.
50. PART FOUR. Remember Phrasal Verbs by using context.
So far, you've seen that the meaning of a phrasal verb often has
no connection to the meaning of The Words which it's made of.
Phrasal verbs can have more than one meaning and using
phrasal verbs correctly depends heavily on register not just on
meaning. Why are these things important to remembering
phrasal verbs?
51. CUARTA PARTE. Recuerda los Phrasal Verbs usando el contexto.
Hasta ahora, hemos visto que el significado de un verbo
compuesto a menudo no tiene conexión con el significado de las
palabras de las que está hecho. Los phrasal verbs pueden tener
más de un significado y el uso correcto de verbos compuestos
depende en gran medida del registro, no solo del significado. ¿Por
qué son estas cosas importantes para recordar los verbos
compuestos?
52. They are important because it is very hard to learn and
remember phrasal verbs without context. For example, if
you learn vocabulary by writing down the translation in your
language and then trying to memorize the translation, you
will have big trouble remembering and using phrasal verbs.
Actually, this is true for all vocabulary we're learning. But. it's
especially true with phrasal verbs. You end up with a list of
verbs that look very similar to you, "look up", "look up to",
"look down", "look through", "look around", "look after", it's
too hard.
53. Son importantes porque NO es muy difícil aprender y recordar los
verbos compuestos sin contexto. Por ejemplo, si aprende
vocabulario escribiendo la traducción en su idioma y luego
tratando de memorizar la traducción, tendrá grandes problemas
para recordar y usar los verbos compuestos. En realidad, esto es
cierto para todo el vocabulario que estamos aprendiendo. Pero. es
especialmente cierto con los verbos compuestos. Terminas con
una lista de verbos que se parecen mucho en si, "look up", "look
up to", "look down", "look through", "look around", "look after",
eso es muy difícil.
"mirar hacia arriba", "mirar hacia arriba", "mirar hacia abajo",
"mirar a través", "mirar alrededor", "cuidar", es demasiado difícil.
54. So practice good vocabulary learning habits with phrasal verbs.
Make sure you learn phrasal verbs in full sentences. If possible the
sentences should mean something to you. Try to take example
sentences from things you read or heard which were interesting for
you. You could even take examples from conversations you had in
English. So long as you're confident you can remember the
sentences correctly. Let's practice, here are three phrasal verbs
from this lesson.
come along
head off
pop-out
come along
head off
pop-out
56. Please make three sentences using these phrasal verbs. (wake up,
get up, get on, )
Ready, here are some suggestions, of course, your sentences will be
different. That's fine. However, if you're not sure that your sentences
are correct, it's important to check. Ask a friend or a teacher,
otherwise you'll learn the words wrong. Here are our suggested
sentences.
a. "Do you want to come along to the cinema tonight?"
b. "It's getting late, so I think I'll head off."
c. I think she's popped out to get something for lunch.
57. Haga tres oraciones usando estos phrasal verbs. (wake up, get up, get on, )
come along - venir también
Head off – ir, irme
Pop out - salir
Listo, aquí hay algunas sugerencias, por supuesto, sus oraciones serán
diferentes. Esta bien. Sin embargo, si no está seguro de que sus oraciones
sean correctas, es importante comprobarlo. Pregúntale a un amigo o
profesor, de lo contrario aprenderás mal las palabras. Aquí están nuestras
oraciones sugeridas.
a. "¿Quieres venir al cine esta noche?"
si. "Se hace tarde, así que creo que me iré".
C. Creo que salió para comer algo.
58. Use a digital flashcard out such as Quizlet. Put your sentences in
his questions with the phrasal verbs replaced with gaps. For
example, you can make the questions easier or more difficult by
removing fewer or more letters. iI you haven't used Quizlet and
haven't heard of anything like that before, then we recommend
checking them out. Also, we highly recommend making more than
one card for each verb for example again.
pop out
- I think she is ______ ___ to get something for lunch.-
-I'm just ____ ____ for a cigarette.-
- I'll be back in a minute. He's just _____ _____ for a walk.-
59. Utilice una tarjeta de memoria flash digital como Quizlet. Ponga
sus oraciones en sus preguntas con los phrasal verbs
reemplazados por espacios. Por ejemplo, puede hacer que las
preguntas sean más fáciles o más difíciles eliminando menos o
más letras. Si no ha usado Quizlet y no ha oído hablar de nada
parecido antes, le recomendamos que los consulte. Además,
recomendamos encarecidamente hacer más de una tarjeta para
cada verbo, por ejemplo, nuevamente.
60. pop out
- I think she is ______ ___ to get something for lunch.-
-I'm just ____ ____ for a cigarette.-
- I'll be back in a minute. He's just _____ _____ for a walk.-
salir
- Creo que está ______ ___ para comprar algo para el
almuerzo.
-Sólo estoy ____ ____ por un cigarrillo.-
- Regreso en un minuto. Está solo _____ _____ para dar un
paseo.-
61. Again, you can make some cards easier and some more
difficult. Review your cards regularly and you'll find it easy to
remember English phrasal verb because you'll be learning
them in context.
62. Una vez más, puede hacer que algunas cartas sean más fáciles
y otras más difíciles. Revise sus tarjetas con regularidad y le
resultará fácil recordar el verbo compuesto en inglés porque
las aprenderá en contexto.
