The total concentration and the chemical forms of heavy metals were determined in
superficial sediments of the Cuchivero river, Venezuela, using sequential extraction and
atomic absorption spectrophotometry with flame. Pollution indices were used to study the
distribution, pollution and environmental risk in the sediments. Total values ranged from,
394-457 mgkg-1 Fe, 46,87-74,82 Mn, 6,45-11,92 Zn, 1,70-5,75 Ni, 0,39-3,7 Cu, 1,25-3,63
Cr, 0,37-1,82 Co, 0,10-0,30 Cd y <Ld-0,20 mgkg-1 Pb. The metals were found to be
strongly associated with the residual fraction minerals (70 to 90%), carbonates and iron
oxihidroxides. Manganese and cadmium were associated mostly exchangeable fraction
(60-70%). The indices indicate that the source of metals is mainly bedrock; no metal
enrichment and contamination exist. The risk of environmental disruption is low for Fe
and Co, high for Zn and Ni, medium for Cu and Cr, and very high for Mn, Cd and Pb.
The objective of this research was to assess the total metal content and bioavailability of
these elements in the sediment of the Duck‘ lagoon (Laguna Los Patos), Sucre state, Venezuela.
By using extractions with HNO3: HClO4: HCl in 3:1:1 ratio to total metals and acetic acid to 10%
for the bioavailable fraction, was determined by atomic absorption spectrometry with air acetylene
flame, that total metals show at their peak concentrations (μg/g), a descending order: Fe (1304.13) > Mn (177.14) > Zn (31.74) > Pb (12.62) > Cu (10.27 )> Cr ( 5.92) > Cd (0.56), associated
with the particles of the kind of mud. The lagoons presents a deterioration with focus of
lead pollution in the central part and copper, nickel and lead towards the far south, where a
sewage treatment plant is located. Iron, manganese, copper, zinc and nickel are in the bioavailable
fraction with values between 2.01-99.62%; 12.00-52.82%; 4.53- 18.88%; 26.52-45.91% y
2.93-91.59% respectively, of the total of each present metal in the sediment. The heterogeneity
observed in the distribution of residual and bioavailable fractions, reflects a wide variability of
the sedimentary matrix. Moreover, the presence of these five metals in the bioavailable fraction
shows a progressive risk for biota of the lagoon, due to the ability of these elements to bioaccumulate
in organisms, suggesting a magnification of these impacts in the future, under the weak
flow of the waters of this ecosystem.
102,45 a 469,44 μgMn g-1; 0,93 a 17,64 μgCu g-1; 4,46 a 17,48 μgNi g-1; 2,46 a 9,61 μgCo g-1; 42,56
a 181,45 μgZn g-1; 1,29 a 8,76 μgCr g-1; 0,03 a 0,74 μgCd g-1 and 0,001 a 7,88 μgPb g-1.
7,50-99,29% Fe; 7,75-66,34% Mn; 22,55-98,89% Zn; 22,85-91,36% Ni; 4,20-85,03% Cu;
manganeso reactivos variaron entre: 0,04-1,97% Fe; 4,15-71,59% Mn; 0,86-3,83% Zn;
estudiado.

The concentrations of heavy metals Co, Cr, Pb and Zn in the bioavailable fraction in surface sediments of marine-coastal region of the city of Cumana, Venezuela, were studied during periods of drought and rain, in 17 sampling stations located along the shoreline. Significant differences between the two periods of sampling were detected for chromium and lead concentrations, reaching the highest values during the rainy season. For the rest of the metals studied a similar behavior was found for both periods. Likewise, significant differences were observed for chromium and lead, showing a greater enrichment of the latter in the area of high river influence.
The hydrochemical, physical-chemical, and biological dynamics were studied in the eastern waters of the gulf of
Cariaco, where wind and precipitation patterns govern these processes to a significant degree. Average monthly values for
both surface and bottom waters were respectively as follows: temperature: 25.69 °C each; salinity: 35.41 and 35.75 units;
density anomaly (ó-t): 23.43 and 23.84 kg/m3; oxygen concentration: 184.49 and 178.38 mmol/kg; pH: 7.98 and 7.94;
nitrates: 3.18 and 4.22 μmol/L; nitrites: 0.45 and 0.60 μmol/L; ammonium: 1.25 and 1.39 μmol/L; total nitrogen: 25.28 and
26.31 μmol/L. Phosphate concentrations between surface and bottom waters varied between 0.60 and 0.79 μmol/L, whereas
those of total phosphorus ranged from 2 to 170 μmol/L. Surface and bottom chlorophyll a concentrations ranged from 5.19
to 4.33 mg/m3, respectively. ANOVA (P<0.05) did not reveal any significant variation between the values studied, but it did
show differences between the values for different months. Decomposition of organic matter was detected, as typified by both
oxygen utilization greater than 50 mmol/kg and denitrification (N*), which increased ammonium concentration and reduced
the pH during periods of upwelling relaxation. There was an imbalance between the maxima of chlorophyll a and those of
nutrients, which evidenced that phosphorus could be an inhibitor of phytoplankton production, especially during upwelling
letup, when Readfield ratio increases from N:P = 16:1 up to N:P = 24:1.
In October 2002 we assessed the mobility and bioavailability baseline levels of four heavy metals – Cd, Cu, Ni,and Zn – by analyzing their spatial distribution and geochemical fractioning in surface sediments of the eastern region of theGulf of Cariaco, heavily affected by industrial and urban development. Metal recovery yielded mg/g-concentrations greaterthan those permitted for non-contaminated sediments, the Cd, Cu, Ni, and Zn content in exchangeable fraction (F1) being0.73, beyond detection levels, 0.12, and 0.46, respectively; in carbonate-bound fraction (F2): 0.46, 0.03, 0.60, and 8.08,respectively; in reducible fraction (F3): 0.47, 0.28, 5.94, and 28.27, respectively; in oxidizable fraction (F4): 0.02, 4.99, 7.18,and 8.61, respectively; and in residual fraction (F5): 0.08, 3.59, 0.84, and 8.53, respectively. Geochemical speciation yieldeda metal accumulation following the sequence: organic matter > Fe and Mn oxihydroxides > residual > carbonates > exchangeable.Sequential analysis revealed exchangeable fraction associated with Cd, suggestive of anthropogenic origin. Mean values ofsands, silts, clays, and total organic matter were 54.21, 39.14, 6.65, 11.22, and 19.33 %, respectively, which render thesediments as sandy-silty, with a higher content of organic matter as a consequence of the biological productivity in surfacewaters. All parameters show a trend to accumulate towards the center of the eastern region of the Gulf of Cariaco.

This research aims to evaluate some chemical parameters of surface sediments of coastal La Restinga lagoon, located in Margarita Island, Nueva Esparta state, Venezuela. Using classical methodology for geochemical, grain size and texture sediment percentage of organic carbon and total organic matter, and calcium carbonate was analyzed. Additionally, the concentrations of total nitrogen, total phosphorus and aliphatic hydrocarbons were determined. The results showed that in the lagoon La Restinga prevailing sedimentary sandy texture, above the sandy-loam and sandy-clay. The percentages of total organic carbon, total organic matter and calcium carbonate respectively varied as follows: 1.70-25.53%, 11.10-82.10% and 2.93-44.01%. Concentrations of 282.10-1571.80 mg kg-1 in total nitrogen, 419.50-2033.70 mg kg-1 in total phosphorus and 5.65-63.18 mg kg-1 for aliphatic hydrocarbons were determined. The total organic matter in the lagoon La Restinga is distributed based on the fine particles of sediment and the presence of mangroves, in turn calcium carbonate, was associated mainly to contributions from organisms with calcareous shell. The low values of the ratio NT/PT (under 5) suggest limiting the nitrogen in the ecosystem, and natural or anthropogenic enrichment of phosphorus in the sediment. The levels of certain aliphatic hydrocarbons, are not considered as contaminants levels as established by CARIPOL (1980), except in the eastern end of the main body of the lake. According to the points made in this study, we can infer that the Restinga Lagoon symptoms of degradation product of human intervention in the ecosystem.
This paper reports the geochemical characteristics and environmental conditions of Cuchivero river sediments in Venezuela, depending on particle size, organic matter, organic carbon, nitrogen and total phosphorus, carbonates and heavy metals. The granulometry was typified by a predominance of sands with low organic matter (0.52 to 0.87%), organic carbon (0.06 to 0.09%) and carbonates content (0.54 to 2.61%) as well as high values of total nitrogen (602-985 mg / kg). The poor correlation between nitrogen, phosphorus and organic matter, it suggests present of nitrogen and total phosphorus of allochthonous origin and no Redfield organic matter. The average heavy metals in mg/kg, showed a concentration gradient descent, Fe (410)> Mn (63.14)> Zn (9.01)> Ni (3.38)> (2.21Cu)> Cr (2.09)> Co (1.13)> Cd (0.21) > Pb (0.07) mg / kg, with an association to the sands and carbonates, suggesting lithogenic origin. From the environmental point of view, no evidence of anthropogenic impacts, as reflected by levels of organic matter and heavy metals are below the permissible values.

Surface sediments were collected from 23 stations in Laguna de Píritu, state of Anzoategui, Venezuela, to
ascertain the geochemical fractioning of Fe, Cd, Cr, and Pb. Seven of the stations selected are close to the lagoon’s confluence
with the sea, nine lie to the center, and the rest towards its innermost end. Four operationally defined fractions -identified as
F1 through F4- were assayed by the selective chemical extraction technique: exchangeable ions, carbonate-bound metals,
metals bound to Fe and Mn oxides and to organic matter, and metals associated to residual minerals. Quantification by atomic
absorption spectroscopy yielded the following results: Fe, Cr, and Pb were bound to the residual fraction, averaging 63, 82, and
58%, respectively. Cd was mainly associated to the exchangeable ions in 28% of the cases and to carbonates in 24% of the
cases. Metals bound to exchangeable ions and to carbonates, the fractions with the highest available potential, tended to
accumulate towards the innermost section of the lagoon. It is suggested that the Fe, Cr, and Pb found in these sediments are
mostly lithogenic in origin, while the Cd is mainly anthropogenic.
The concentrations of the metals
Cu, Pb, Mn and Zn in fra ctions geochemistry in
six sediment core of the lagoon Unare, Venezuela.
A procedure of sequential extraction of metals
was determined, for each fraction was used
reagents different and conditions of digestion
and the concentrations of metals determined
with spectrophotometer of Atomic Absorption.
The fractionating of metals indicated an order of

in the reactive phase between : n.d-7,90; 0,00-
4,90; 133,95-961 ,79 and 0,05-9,61 IJg /g for Cu,
Pb, Mn and Zn, respectively; being observed
in most of the core an increase in the superior
layers caused by diagenetics processes,
changes in the textural composition (contained
of clay or organic matter) due to the anthropics
contributions that the lagoon receives. The Mn
presented in core 1, 2 and 3 the smaller concentrations
to the surface, which suggests an
alteration of the natural geochemical cycles that
tends to a diminution of the manganese contributions
through tlíe time. In the Zn, its vertical
distribution reflects a strong relation between the
metal, the organic matter and texture in relation
to the depth, which is of sandy and poor texture
in organic matter, with a contained minor of th is
metal. The concentrations average of metals total are were: 36,31; 7,57; 445,60 and 64.07
IJg/g for Cu, Pb, Mn and Zn respectively. These
results are analogous to the reported ones for
sediments no contaminated; nevertheless, some
metals in the reactive phase, showed to slight
increases towards the surface, indicating recent
contamination, product of the intervention that
has undergone this lagoon in the last decades
and to the contributions of the Unare river.
In Venezuela there are few limnological studies of the large rivers, such as the Apure, principally owing to thecomplexity of the logistics for the taking of samples. In the present study results was determinate for a number of physiochemicalvariables (river level, conductivity, temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, suspended material, turbidity, transparency of thewater, total nitrogen, nitrate, nitrite, ammonium, total phosphorus, phosphate and silicate) corresponding to the study years2001-2002 in the discharge waters of this important river. It was determined that the variation of the water level of the ApureRiver produces a notable influence on the chemical components of the water. There are two annual hydrological periods, lowwater (December - June), characterized by high gradients of values of the suspended and dissolved chemical species, and highwater (July - November), characterized by descending gradients and concentrations. Evidence is seen for erosive processes andweathering in the headwaters of the Apure River, as shown by high levels of suspended materials and silicate. Similarly, evidence is found for the excessive use of fertilizers and/or anthropic activity in the area of drainage of the river, as reflectedby the high values of nitrogen and total phosphorus. The high nitrogen/phosphate ratio gives evidence for organic fertility inthe waters of the Apure River.
This paper reports on the speciation of Fe, Mn, Ni, and Pb in the matter suspended in the superficial waters of
the low basin and the surface trapped plume of the Manzanares river, in Cumaná, state of Sucre, Venezuela, by studying
sediment and water samples taken at 22 stations deployed throughout this area of influence between July 1996 and June 1997.
The suspended matter increased during the rainy season (July to November), reaching a maximum value in September, at 1075
mg/L. The heavy metal flow, in close association with the solid bodies in suspension, also increased during the rainy season,
their total concentrations ranging from 0.54 to 558.80 ìmol/L, from 0.02 to 11.67 ìmol/L, from below detection to 1.62
ìmol/L, and from below detection to 0.17 ìmol/L for Fe, Mn, Ni, and Pb, respectively. Overall, the metals adsorbed to the
surface of both organic and inorganic particles and sediments revealed a nonconservative behavior, evidencing wide removal
at low salinities, namely, desorbing on account of the exchange with the most abundant ions in the sea wedge, Na+ and K+.
Human activity in the area kept a sustained and continuous contribution of materials to the river plume. Elevated concentrations
of Mn and Pb are adsorbed to the suspended matter in the form of carbonates and/or reactive manganese oxide hydroxide,
which allows for a less constrained incorporation to the trophic chain or freedom to return to the water mass, and is suggestive
of their origin in the anthropic activities carried out in and around the watershed. The Fe and Ni, on the other hand, are
primarily associated to clay minerals mainly in the form of aluminosilicates.
Los ríos son el principal
vehículo de transporte
de constituyentes químicos
hacia el medio marino, especialmente
de metales pesados. Numerosos estudios
tierra hacia el mar (Zhang et al., 1992;
Yeats, 1993). Igualmente se ha reconocido
que las descargas de los ríos influyen
en la variabilidad espacial y temporal de
los metales pesados (Gibbs, 1977;
Palanques, 1994). Por otra parte, los ríos
contribuyen con significantes aportes de
materia orgánica e inorgánica. Los metales
trazas que están asociados a la materia
orgánica son liberados durante el proceso
de degradación de la misma
(Magnusson y Rasmussen, 1982; Valette-

The carbon regeneration in the water column of
the Cariaco Basin (Venezuela) was investigated
using a regression model of total alkalinity (TA)
and the concentration of total inorganic carbon
(TCO2
). Primary productivity (PP) was determined
from the inorganic carbon fraction assimilated
by phytoplankton and the variation of the 22 and
23°C isotherm was used as an indicator of coastal
upwelling. The results indicate that CO2
levels were
lowest (1962 µmol/kg) at the surface and increased
to 2451 µmol/kg below the oxic-anoxic redox
interface. The vertical regeneration distribution of
carbon was dominated (82%) by organic carbon
originating from the soft tissue of photosynthetic
organisms, whereas 18% originated from the
dissolution of biogenic calcite. The regeneration
of organic carbon was highest in the surface layer
in agreement with the primary productivity values.
However, at the oxic-anoxic interface a second more
intense maximum was detected (70-80%), generated
by chemotrophic respiration of organic material
by microorganisms. The percentages in the anoxic
layers were lower than in the oxic zone because
aerobic decomposition occurs more rapidly than
anaerobic respiration of organic material because
more labile fractions of organic carbon have already
been mineralized in the upper layers.

The Manzanares River is one of the more important rivers of Venezuela inasmuch as it is used to supply drinking
water to a large part of the northeastern zone of Venezuela. For this reason a study was undertaken of the surface waters of the
estuarine zone of the river, following the saline gradient from zero to salinities greater than 30. The following properties were
measured: river volume flow, rainfall, pH, temperature, suspended materials, dissolved oxygen and ammonium, and heavy metals
(Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, Ni, Cr, Pb and Cd) in particulate and dissolved phases. River volume flow varied with seasonal rainfall throughout
the year, as expected, while temperature varied between 24.5 and30.4 oC and pH ranged from 6.65 and 8.9. From the dry to the wet
season, suspended material increased from 23 to 880 mg/l at low salinity, and always decreased progressively as salinity increased.
Concentrations of total ammonium, 14.5 to 14.3 mmol/l, were high, while those of dissolved oxygen, 3.57 to 5.27 ml/l, were low, and
these levels were even more accentuated at salinities under 5 during the dry season. The highest concentrations found for heavy
metals were: Fe 406.02; Mn 5.57; Zn 2.18; Cu 0.72; Cr 0.19; Ni 0.72; Pb 0.12; Cd 0.03 mmol/l. These surpass Venezuelan legal limits
for water intended for human consumption as well as for waters to be discharged in coastal areas. Concentrations decreased at
increased salinity because of the dilution effect, flocculation and/or precipitation in the form of oxyhydroxides. The results obtained
in this study reveal a serious deterioration of the state of the waters of the lower Manzanares river.

The hydrographic conditions and sanitary quality of the waters of the coastal region of Playa Grande Bay
were studied during May 2003. We set up 21 stations to collect surface and bottom samples and three current meters – an
upward-mounted hydroacoustic profiler and two single-point Doppler current sensors that operated for 14 days. Samples were
collected in 5-L Niskin bottles equipped with a lid-closing device operated through a cable. The samples were studied according
to established methods for seawater analysis. The pH ranged between 7.93 and 8.31; the temperature, between 22.0 and 24.0
ºC; the salinity, between 36.56 and 37.17 units; the color, between 15 and 30 Pt-Co units. The biochemical oxygen demand
ranged between 4.05 and 68.96 mg/L; and total nitrogen, between 0.53 and 1.27 mg/L. Total phosphate fluctuated between
0.02 and 0.16 mg/L; lipids, between 0.08 and 0.39 mg/L; aliphatic hydrocarbons, between 0.01 and 0.12 mg/L. Detergents did
not exceed the value of 0.02 mg/L. In some cases, total and fecal coliforms reached values beyond the limit of 1000 NMP/
100ml for total coliforms set by the Ministry of the Environment for type 4 waters (partial and total human contact). The
quality of these waters shows the impact of effluents, running mostly from east to west, in the sector of Campo Ajuro. The
physical and chemical conditions of the waters of this bay may vary throughout the year as a consequence of the dynamic
conditions prevailing in the region. It is recommended that these studies be carried out at least twice a year: during the dry
season (December to May), when the trade winds increase, and during the rainy season (June to November).
The sequential extraction method SEDEX (sedimentary extraction) modificated by ANDERSON & DELANEY
(2000) has been used to quantify separately four sedimentary phosphorus reservoirs in sediments of the gulf of Paria and the
venezuelan atlantic coast: adsorbed or labile plus P-associated to oxides (F1), P-authigenic (F2), P-detrital (F3) and P-organic
(F4). The marine and continental origin of the sediments was determined by separation of detrital apatite (continental) and
carbonate fluorapatite (CFA) of marine origin. The total phosphorus concentrations are low within the gulf of Paria and the
atlantic venezuelan coast in comparison with other coastal areas (2.38 μmol g-1 to 6.84 μmol g-1) and is mainly in detrital form
(0.78 to 4.61 μmol g-1). In decreasing order the concentrations are: organic (0.56 a 2.47 μmol g-1), adsorbed or labile
phosphorus plus associated oxides (0, 04 to 0. 56 μmol g-1) > autigenic phosphorus (0.04 to 0.31 μmol g-1). ANOVA statistical
tests (P < 0.05) show discrepancies only in the concentrations of the adsorbed or labile phosphorus plus associated oxides
fractions, values being lower in the gulf of Paria. The results suggests that the principal sources are terrestrial lithogenic
apatite from eroded material of the orogenic belts of the coastal Andes and Guiana shield and venezuelan and colombian plains
which was then carried by waters of the Orinoco river and redistributed there. The organic material contribution of native
origin and aloctonal is the second factor that controls the presence of phosphorus in the sediment. The marine contributions
are noted towards the northeast end typified by the presence of carbonate fluoroapatite, indicating of transformation
processes within the sediment.
We compared the growth of the scallop Euuolu (Pecten) ziczuc (L.) in three situations which
potentially could be used for commercial culture, in cages maintained in suspension, in cages on the
bottom and in cages partly buried in a sediment bottom. The latter permitted the scallops to bury
themselves as in their natural habitat. Throughout the 7-month study, growth, as measured by shell
length and muscle mass, was by far superior for scallops in the partly buried cages. Possible explanations
for this are ( 1) that the scallops are stressed by enclosures which prevent them from burying
themselves and (2) that organic material at the sediment/water interface is an important food resource
and E. ziczac has better access to this when it buries itself flush with the bottom. The timing of gonadal
growth and spawning varied markedly among treatments. Some spawnings coincided with temperature
increases but others did not. Differences between scallops in suspension compared to those in bottom
treatments suggested that reproduction is as much controlled by conditions in the immediate environment
of the scallops as by large-scale environmental factors. Survival was highest for the scallops
maintained in partly buried cages.

Cd y Pb.

Speciation of heavy metals in sediments of the Cuchivero River,
Venezuela
Abstract
Keywords: speciation, metals, sediments, tropical rivers, environmental.

Introducción
Los metales pesados tienen un
gran significado como indicadores de la
calidad ecológica de las fuentes de agua,
debido a su toxicidad y especialmente a
su comportamiento bioacumulativo. Es
por ello que son considerados como
punto de partida en muchas
investigaciones a nivel ambiental. Los
ríos de la Guayana venezolana presentan
sedimentos sumamente lixiviados, ricos
en oxihidróxidos de hierro y aluminio, lo
que ha permitido considerar la región
como un frágil ecosistema, susceptible a
cambios bruscos por la posible
intervención desmedida e irracional del
hombre (1).

ICC= = (CP1 + CP2 +
CP3……+…….CPn)1/N; donde
CP=[metal]/Bn; y [metal] =

altamente pura (agua calidad
NANOPURE de conductividad de 18
cm-1). Esto fue obtenido con un sistema
NANOPURE UV, Marca Barnstead. Para
determinar asociaciones entre
parámetros se realizó análisis de
correlación de Pearson utilizando el
paquete STATGRAPHICS PLUS 5.1.

1,25-3,63 Cr, 0,37-1,82 Co, 0,10-0,30 Cd
y <Ld-0,20 mgkg-1 Pb. Los valores
promedios (mgkg-1) fueron 423 de Fe;
64,19 de Mn; 9,02 de Zn; 3,87 de Ni; 2,25
de Cu; 2,07 de Cr; 1,16 de Co; 0,21 de Cd
y 0,07 mgkg-1 de Pb respectivamente
(Tabla 2).

Los valores para la muestra
recolectada en el río Guaniamo fueron
456; 70,33; 9,11; 4,53; 2,69; 2,33; 1,73;
0,20 y 0,15 mgkg-1 para Fe, Mn, Zn, Ni,
Cu, Cr, Co, Cd y Pb respectivamente. La
especiación mostró que el hierro se
distribuyó entre 0,14-0,17 mgkg-1 en la
fracción F1; 31,19-95,61 mgkg-1 en la
fracción F2; 9,81-39-32 mgkg-1 en F3 y
331,59-388,41 mgkg-1 en F4,
evidenciándose una preferencia superior
al 90 % hacia la fracción residual
(Fig.2B). La distribución por fracciones
para hierro en promedio fue F4
>F2>F3>F1. Para manganeso los valores
variaron entre 9,56-15,05 mgkg-1 F1;
19,18-31,92 mgkg-1 F2; 16,22 - 14,03
mgkg-1 F3; 5,37-23,93 mgkg-1 F4 con una
distribución F2>F1 F3 F4,
evidenciándose una mayor asociación del
metal entre 50 y 65 % del total en las
fracciones F2 y F1 (Fig.2C). El zinc varió
entre 0,65-1,63 mgkg-1 F1: 1,44-4,72
mgkg-1 F2; 0,95-3,41 mgkg-1 F3; 2,16-5,91
mgkg-1 F4, mostrando una distribución
heterogénea con gradiente creciente
F4>F2>F3>F1, apreciándose una mayor
tendencia a estar en la fracción residual,
sin embargo la suma de las fracciones
F1+F2+F3 alcanzan en conjunto valores
entre el 50-70% (Fig. 2D).Las fracciones
de níquel oscilaron entre no detectado-

2,14 mgkg-1 F4, con una secuencia
F4>F2>F3>F1, mostrando al igual que el
zinc una tendencia hacia la fase residual.
La concentración de cobre estuvo
muy alternada entre las estaciones, y
fluctuó entre 0,05-1,13F1; no detectado-
0,21 F2; no detectado-1,28 F3; 0,08-2,16
F4. En promedio la tendencia de la
distribución fue F4> F3>F1>F2, con
asociación la fracción residual. Sin
embargo estaciones como la número tres,
presentó casi el 100% del metal asociado
F3 (Fig.2F). Cromo varió entre <Ld-0,93
F1; 0,08-0,33 mgkg-1 F2; 0,31-0,83 mgkg-
1 F3; 0,71-1,29 mgkg-1 F4, con valores
superiores al 40 % en la fracción residual
(Fig.3A).
(Fig.3B).La secuencia en la especiación
fue F4> F3> F2. El valor de cadmio en F1
varió entre no detectado-0,06 mg/kg y en

total.

comportamiento similar (Fig.3D).

La secuencia de la especiación fue
F3=F4. Para la estación cinco, la cual está
dentro del río Guaniamo, la especiación
mostró valores en la fracción F1 de: 0,45;
13,1; 1,36. 0,21, 0,14; 0,13 mgkg-1 para Fe,
Mn, Zn, Ni, Cu, Cr respectivamente y no
detectado para Co, Cd y Pb. Para este
mismo orden de representación de los
metales, los valores de F2 variaron en
36,06; 26,22; 1,86; 1,92, 0,14; 0,13 mgkg-
1, no detectado; 0,14 mgkg-1 y no
detectado. Para F3 los valores fueron,
52,24; 19,10; 1,30; <Ld; 0,37; 0,43; 0,02
y 0,06 mgkg-1 para Fe, Mn, Zn, Ni y Cu,
Cr, Co, Cd y Pb respectivamente. Por
ultimo para la fracción F4 las
concentraciones fueron de 367; 11,91;
4,59; 2,40, 2,41; 1,21; 1,13, 0,04 y 0,09
mgkg-1 respectivamente. Las diferentes
secuencias de especiación para los
metales en el río Guaniamo fueron
F4>F3>F2>F1 para Fe; F2>F1>F3>F4
para Mn; F4>F2>F1=F3 para Zn;
F4>F2>F1>F3 para Ni; F4>F1=F2>F3
para Cu, F4>F3>F1=F2 para Cr;
0,56, r= 0,52, r=0,68). Esto corrobora lo
apreciado durante los diferentes pasos
empleados en la especiación, lo cual
confirma que, estos metales se
encuentran presentes en los carbonatos,
asociados a óxidos, preferiblemente a los
de hierro, y en forma residual formando
parte de la estructura intermolecular de
los diferentes minerales. Por otra parte la
correlación observada entre Mn y Cd con
los lodos, evidencia que estos metales se
encuentran adsorbidos por fuerzas
intermoleculares débiles en la superficie
de los limos y arcillas, pudiendo liberarse
por cambios en el pH. Esta observación
se corrobora con lo observado en la
especiación. Asociaciones fuertes de los
metales con la fracción residual e
oxihidróxidos de hierro, similares a los
determinados en esta investigación han
sido reportadas para los sedimentos del
Orinoco Medio, Venezuela (4).
Las asociaciones apreciadas en los
metales con la granulometría, refleja la
compleja mineralogía de la cuenca. La
provincia Cuchivero ocupa una porción
occidental del Cratón Amazónico,
formada por arcos magmáticos de edad
1,98-1,88 Ga que consiste esencialmente
de rocas granitoides calcoalcalinas (23).
También hay minerales como cuarzo,
feldespastos, circón, allanita, biotita
allanita, ilmenita, ilmenorutilo, monacita,
rutilo, hornblenda y biotita.

Cuchivero (Fig.3F).
Conclusiones
Los metales Zn, Ni, Pb y Fe se
encuentran asociados
preferencialmente a la fracción residual
y carbonatos, aunque algunos como Cu,
Co y Cr también pueden presentarse
asociados a óxidos de hierro. Metales
como, Mn y Cd se encuentran
principalmente en la fracción
intercambiable. Los índices empleados
indican que todos los metales, excepto
plomo, tienen como fuente principal de
origen la roca madre y algunas que
otras fuentes adicionales a la roca
madre, no evidenciándose fuentes
antropogénicas. No se evidencia
enriquecimiento, excepto para cadmio,
ni contaminación por ninguno de los
metales investigados.
