2. 1 Greetings
1 SaludoAfter a decade, the Basque Audio-vi-
sual Cluster EIKEN, in this new
stage, has opted to evolve in a
logical and natural way, in res-
ponse to the reality of the mar-
ket. It has acquired a digital
DNA, the distinguishing mark
of those having the capacity to
compete during this digital trans-
formation.
Digital content, its creation and distribution
bring together a series of sectors that share
common features with the audio-visual sec-
tor, and help us face current challenges. This
is our vision and, with it, we would like to
identify opportunities in this wide-ranging
and dynamic universe of digital content in
the Basque Country.
Though we do so looking to the future, we
have not forgotten recent experience when
our companies were obliged to make a se-
ries of adjustments, while actively participa-
ting in the many actions carried out by
EIKEN.
Helping new ventures get a foothold in the
local market, and taking the industry to the
global market, by attending international
events, and organising trade missions, or
taking part in international consortiums
which help bring us closer to benchmark and
innovative realities.
With regard to this experience, particular
mention must be made to the institutions
providing support, particularly: the Basque
Government, the Regional Government of
Bizkaia and Bilbao City Council.
enfrentamos. Esta es nuestra visión y en
base a ella queremos identificar oportu-
visto obligadas a efectuar sucesivos ajustes,
3. 2 Management
2 Gestión
Just a year, ago, following the elections for
the new Management Board which were held
in June 2014, EIKEN member companies
passed a new operational structure for gui-
ding the Association’s activity on a day-to-
day basis.
The aim was to ensure that we are up to the
challenges in the audio-visual and multime-
dia sector, with internationalisation and coo-
peration as the priority areas of strategy, and,
to this end, the Strategic Committees have
been replaced by sectoral Vice-presidencies.
This inverted pyramid structure aims at
generating specific projects that satisfy com-
panies’ real needs and thus, from the entre-
preneurial base, provide an efficient
response to the current complex situation.
The 5 Vice-presidencies, led by the people in
charge of benchmark companies in the res-
pective subsectors which, in turn, form a
Management Board, are: Vice-presidency of
Cinema (IRUSOIN); TV, (PAUSOKA); Video
games (DIGIPEN); Multi-media ecosystem,
(THE BLACKOUT PROJECT); and Services
(ITESA).
The Focus Group session, held in September
2014 on the occasion of the International TV
Format Challenge organized by EIKEN, was
a clear sign of the success of this change.
actual.
Ecosistema Multimedia, (THE BLACKOUT
4. 3 Activities
3 Actividades
3.1 Eiken actions
3.1 Acciones Eiken
Innova Basque Audiovisual. It is an interna-•
tionalization measure involving innovative
cooperation which pursues international for-
mat production. Organized as a competition
with a pitching session before an internatio-
nal jury, the winning company ob-
tains funding and retains all
rights for its project, which is
broadcast on EiTB. In 2014 it was
further strengthened by aid from
the institutions and from EiTB,
and went from a pilot programme
to the production of four pro-
grammes.
Audiovisual ecosystem & digital media. In•
2014, Eiken launched a strategy to attract
these companies to the cluster, in order to
carry out joint projects with members. The
conclusions drawn form the basis of the on-
going evolution process.
Creative industries in Europe. The objective•
of this action was to obtain information, as
exact as possible, on the latest develop-
ments throughout the world in creative in-
dustries, and their capacity to generate
wealth in the traditional sectors to which
they belong, and in others with which they
wish to converge.
Innova Basque Audiovisual.
5. International mobility of clusters. The pur-•
pose of this action was to draw up a dossier
that would afford the cluster and its compa-
nies visibility in the different structures
which, throughout Europe, use the quadruple
helix model as a reference for galvanising
projects included in the Horizon 2020 pro-
gramme and others.
X European seminar on quality and exce-•
llence. “New Business Models: adapt… or
adapt” was the title of the Seminar organised
by Eiken in 2014 together with Deusto Busi-
ness School. It brought together experts
from the sector, representatives of the aca-
demic world, and young digital natives
who offered interesting examples of
good practices in order to be more
competitive in the digital era.
Taxation in the audiovisual•
sector. The main subjects of
a seminar organised in con-
junction with Landwell PwC
were the economics of film
making and, associated with
it, the possibilities for the sec-
tor, for both investors, through
tax deductions, and for society,
because of the economic repercu-
ssions for many other activities implied
by shooting a film.
EikenTALENT. In 2014 the EikenTALENT Pro-•
ject held its seventh edition and successfully
mobilised a large number of experts, new ta-
lent, companies, institutions and different
bodies, making it a benchmark action among
those carried out by the cluster. In addition,
one of its fundamental objectives is youth
employment which makes it even more va-
luable in the face of the current economic si-
tuation.
Congregó a
profesionales, nuevos talentos, empresas,
cobra mayor valor.
6. MipTV and MIPCOM. . International audio-vi-•
sual entertainment markets which bring to-
gether thousands of experts from all over the
world in Cannes twice a year. Under the Bas-
que Audio-visual brand, and managed by
EIKEN with its own stand in the Riviera Buil-
ding in the Palais des Festivals, one of the
fair’s preferential locations, Basque compa-
nies regularly attend this professional event.
The Basque Audio-visual delegation was
made up of over ten companies which, on
average, held 20 meetings.
Smart Culture. Smart Culture implied a major•
step for Eiken in its international mobility
strategy together with other European clus-
ters. The main objective of this project is to
put European cultural heritage within the
reach of the general public by using digital
technology and, to this end, they have set up
several work packages, among which of par-
ticular importance is the SWOT analysis and
the action plan of general measures agreed
between the 8 regions in the international
consortium.
Cooperation workshop for internationaliza-•
tion. The point of the workshop was to ins-
truct companies in the audio-visual sector on
how to present their project on the interna-
tional market before possible buyers/co-pro-
ducers. The workshop was aimed at
production companies interested in broade-
ning their work area to the international mar-
ket.
MipTV y MIPCOM. Mercados internacionales•
nacional.
Taller de cooperación para la internacionali-•
zación. El objetivo del Taller ha sido formar
a las empresas del sector audiovisual para
que realicen una correcta presentación de su
proyecto en el mercado internacional ante
posibles compradores/co-productores. El
Taller estaba dirigido a empresas producto-

7. Brazil. Eiken was invited to present its expe-•
rience as one of the reference cluster asso-
ciations in the audio-visual sector in the 1st
Sul Audiovisual Market which was held in Rio
Grande do Sul. Eiken was the role model for
creating the Brazilian cluster APL-RS, which
was set up following a visit to the Basque
Country by a delegation from this important
state in southern Brazil.
Natpe 2015. In addition to the aforesaid,•
Eiken also started preparations for attending
Natpe 2015, one of the most important
events on television and digital content,
aimed mainly at North American and South
American markets- it is a must to get to
know business trends.
Brasil.
en Rio Grande do Sul.
tenidos digitales; dirigido principalmente a
