1. El invierno y las hojas secas se alejan con las ráfagas del viento. Las
ventiscas se llevan el polen hacia las flores y dejan caer semillas por
doquier… ¡La primavera está cerca! Su llegada a México está
marcada por el equinoccio de primavera, también conocido como el
equinoccio de marzo, que ocurre cada año entre el 20 y 21 de marzo.

coming! Its arrival in Mexico is marked by the spring equinox, also

2. known as March equinox or vernal equinox, which occurs every year
between March 20th and 21st.

3. La palabra “equinoccio”, viene del latín Aequinoctium, que deriva de
aequus y significa “equidad”; indicando que el día y la noche duran lo
mismo. Este fenómeno astronómico sucede en la época en que el sol
se ubica justo sobre el ecuador y la duración del día y la noche es
casi la misma.
Este evento cósmico influye en nosotros pues, a pesar de que
pasamos muchas horas frente a las pantallas y no siempre estamos
sincronizados con los ciclos de la naturaleza, somos afectados por la
luz del sol y las fases de la luna.
The word “equinox” comes from the Latin Aequinoctium, which derives
from aequus and means “equity”; indicating that the day and the night
have the same length. This astronomical phenomenon occurs at the
time when the Sun is located just above the equator and the duration
of day and night is almost the same.
This cosmic event influences us because, even though we spend
many hours in front of the screens and we are not always

4. synchronized with the cycles of nature, we are affected by the light of
the Sun and the phases of the Moon.
El equinoccio marca un cambio de estaciones, la llegada de la
primavera en el hemisferio norte ocurre entre el 20 y 21 de marzo y la
entrada del otoño entre el 22 y 23 de septiembre. En los países del
hemisferio sur la primavera arriba en septiembre y el otoño llega en
marzo.
The equinox marks the changing of the seasons. The arrival of spring
in the Northern Hemisphere occurs between March 20th and 21st and
the beginning of autumn between September 22nd and 23rd. In the
Southern Hemisphere countries, spring arrives in September and
autumn arrives in March.

5. Para las cosmovisiones antiguas, la llegada de la primavera estaba
relacionada con la idea del triunfo del bien sobre el mal y con la lucha
entre dualidades como la luz y la oscuridad. Desde entonces,
simboliza que dejamos un estado de hibernación y que nuestro
cuerpo está listo para “germinar” al exterior, florecer y ser más
fructífero; tal como sucede en la naturaleza que nos rodea. Se cree
que hay una transición de la oscuridad hacia la luz y todo el planeta
experimenta un “renacimiento”.
For ancient worldviews, the arrival of spring was related to the idea of
​

the triumph of good over evil and to the struggle between dualities
such as light and darkness. Since then, it symbolizes that we leave
behind a state of hibernation and that our body is ready to “sprout”
outside, flourish, and be more fruitful; just as it happens in the nature
that surrounds us. It is believed that there is a transition from dark to
light and the entire planet experiences a “rebirth”.

6. Las culturas indígenas prehispánicas como la maya, zapoteca y
azteca fueron grandes espectadores del cielo y los ciclos de la Tierra,
por lo tanto, era verdaderamente importante para ellos festejar el
equinoccio de primavera. Los mayas formaron su calendario
astronómico, al cual alinearon sus periodos de cultivo y el diseño de
sus maravillosas construcciones. Los aztecas también idearon su
propio calendario y crearon grandes observatorios celestes; mientras
que los zapotecas diseñaron un sistema de observación astral que
usaban para dar orientación a sus edificaciones y para que sus
sacerdotes hicieran predicciones.
Sus conocimientos astronómicos y su extraordinaria destreza
arquitectónica quedaron plasmados en las ruinas que en la actualidad
reúnen a miles de visitantes, quienes son testigos del encanto que se
produce entre los efectos de la luz solar y las edificaciones.
Pre-Hispanic indigenous cultures such as the Mayan, Zapoteca, and
Aztec were great spectators of the sky and the cycles of the Earth,
therefore it was enormously important for them to celebrate the spring
equinox. The Mayans formed their own astronomical calendar, to
which they aligned their farming periods and the design of their

7. wonderful buildings. The Aztecs also devised their own calendar and
created great celestial observatories; while the Zapotecs designed an
astral observation system that they used to give orientation to their
buildings and for their priests to make predictions.
Their astronomical knowledge and their extraordinary architectural
skills were reflected in the ruins that currently gather thousands of
visitors, who witness the charm that occurs between the effects of
Sunlight and the buildings.
Siendo magníficos estudiosos del manto celeste, en las costumbres
de los pueblos originarios de Mesoamérica podemos distinguir tres
elementos que permean los rituales de primavera que hasta hoy se
practican en el México contemporáneo:
1. El acontecimiento de un evento natural como el equinoccio.
2. La creencia espiritual de una fuerza sobrenatural cósmica, que
en primavera se asocia con la renovación y purificación.
3. La construcción de increíbles observatorios astronómicos,
palacios y adoratorios.

8. Como parte de su legado, actualmente es tradición visitar centros
arqueológicos notables y subir a la punta de sus pirámides. Estando
arriba se extienden los brazos hacia el oriente para recibir la “energía
de renovación”. Adicionalmente, es muy común vestir de blanco para
reflejar la luz solar y evocar pureza.
Popularmente en estas ruinas se hacen danzas, cánticos, rituales
chamánicos y “limpias energéticas”. Se encienden sahumerios y se
quema incienso para alejar al mal, limpiar al cuerpo de males y
purificar al espíritu. Se escuchan los tambores, el retumbar de las
pulseras de conchas de los danzantes y el sonido de los caracoles
marinos al soplar a través de ellos.
Otro ritual típico de primavera para desintoxicar el cuerpo y limpiar el
alma es recibir un baño de vapor dentro de un temazcal, también
llamado Temazcalli, que significa “casa de vapor”.
Being magnificent students of the celestial mantle, in the customs of
the original peoples of Mesoamerica we can distinguish three
elements that permeate the spring rituals that are still practiced in
contemporary Mexico today:
1. The occurrence of a natural event such as the equinox.
2. The spiritual belief of a cosmic supernatural force, which in
spring is associated with renewal and purification.
3. The construction of incredible astronomical observatories,
palaces, and shrines.
As part of their legacy, it is now a tradition to visit notable
archaeological centers and climb to the top of their pyramids. At the

9. top, the arms are extended to the east to receive the “energy of
renewal”. In addition, it is quite common to wear white to reflect the
light and evoke purity.
It is popular to perform dances, chants, shamanic rituals, and
“energetic cleanses” in these ruins. Sahumerios (aromatic herbs
bundles) are lit and frankincense burned to ward off evil, clear the
body from illness, and purify the spirit. You can hear the drums, the
rumbling of the dancers’ shell bracelets, and the sound of sea snails
blowing through them.
Another typical spring ritual to detoxify the body and cleanse the soul
is to receive a steam bath inside a temazcal, also called Temazcalli,
which means “steam house”.

encontrar en centros ceremoniales y lugares turísticos de varios
países de América Latina. En su interior se calientan piedras hasta 40
grados centígrados y se arroja agua para obtener vapor que hace
sudar a los participantes con la intención de liberar toxinas y
emociones acumuladas.

10. Se usan sahumerios de distintas hierbas que facilitan la
desintoxicación y existe todo un procedimiento para recibir sus
beneficios físicos y espirituales. Se asocia con entrar al vientre de la
madre para renacer, esta transición se relaciona con los ciclos
terrestres y el culto a la fertilidad, por eso es muy socorrido
actualmente durante el equinoccio de primavera.
It is an igloo-shaped construction made of mud and are usually found
in ceremonial centers and tourist places in several Latin American
countries. Inside, stones are heated to 40 degrees Celsius and water
is thrown to obtain steam that makes participants sweat with the
intention of releasing accumulated toxins and emotions.
Sahumerios from different herbs are used to facilitate detoxification
and there is a whole procedure to receive its physical and spiritual
benefits. It is associated with entering the mother’s womb to be
reborn, this transition is related to earth cycles and the cult of fertility,
which is why it is currently very popular during the spring equinox.

Es un lugar ideal para sentir la transición del invierno a la primavera
pues cada construcción juega con la simbología de la muerte y el
nacimiento, siembra y cosecha, masculino y femenino. Teotihuacán
está diseñada en relación con los astros y se ubica en el Estado de
México. El punto donde se reúne la gente a celebrar el equinoccio de
primavera es la Pirámide del Sol, donde se hacían ofrendas
relacionadas con el agua, la cosecha y el cultivo; pues en sus
profundidades se encontraba un manantial. En el extremo opuesto,
como complemento a la deidad del sol, está la Pirámide de Luna
donde se venera a Chalchiutlicue la diosa del agua.

construction plays with the symbolism of death and birth, sowing and
harvest, male and female. Teotihuacán is designed in relation to the
stars and it is located in Mexico State. The point where people gather

12. to celebrate the spring equinox is the Pyramid of the Sun, where
offerings related to water, harvest, and cultivation were made; for in its
depths there was a water spring. At the opposite extreme, as a
complement to the deity of the Sun, is the Pyramid of the Moon where
Chalchiutlicue the water goddess is worshiped.
Chichen Itzá se ubica en la península de Yucatán y es el lugar
perfecto para percibir con todos tus sentidos un nuevo ciclo. En este
lugar se puede percibir un efecto casi sobrenatural. Antes de la
puesta del sol, en la Pirámide de Kukulcán o “serpiente emplumada”,
se reflejan triángulos que bajan por la escalinata hacia las cabezas de
serpiente talladas en la base y, conforme pasan los minutos, se puede
ver cómo desciende una serpiente de cascabel. La serpiente
emplumada es una deidad que representa al viento y al agua.
Chichen Itzá is located in the Yucatan Peninsula and is the perfect
place to perceive a new cycle with all your senses. In this place you
can sense an effect that is almost supernatural. Before Sunset, in the
Pyramid of Kukulcán or “feathered serpent”, triangles are reflected
that move down the steps towards the serpent heads carved at the
base, as the minutes pass, you can see how a rattlesnake descends.
The feathered serpent is a deity that represents wind and water.

13. Su nombre significa “lugar donde hay escrituras en las piedras” y está
a 30 minutos de Mérida. Al amanecer del 21 de marzo la puerta del
Templo de las Siete Muñecas (o del Sol) se ilumina y en cierto
momento el astro queda justo a la mitad.
Its name means “place where there are writings on the stones” and it
is 30 minutes from Mérida. At dawn on March 21st, the door of the
Temple of the Seven Dolls (or the Sun) lights up and at a certain point
the star is right in the middle.
Monte Albán se ubica en Oaxaca y es el centro ceremonial más
importante de la cultura zapoteca y tuvo una gran relevancia agrícola.
Se alza sobre una montaña, desde donde se aprecia todo el valle de
Oaxaca. Sus construcciones son colosales y el equinoccio se celebra
en el Monumento de los Danzantes.

14. Monte Albán is located in Oaxaca, and it is the most important
ceremonial center of the Zapoteca culture and had great agricultural
relevance. It stands on a mountain, from where you can see the entire
valley of Oaxaca. Its constructions are colossal, and the equinox is
celebrated in the Monument of the Dancers.
En este complejo arqueológico del territorio azteca, en el estado de
Puebla, se realiza una celebración muy detallada del equinoccio. Se
hacen ofrendas, danzas, representaciones del mito de la creación del
sol, rituales prehispánicos y ceremonias para atraer prosperidad y
bienestar. Esta pirámide es la más grande del mundo, con 400 metros
de cada lado, y gran parte de ella está oculta en la montaña.
In this archaeological complex of the Aztec territory, in the state of
Puebla, an incredibly detailed celebration of the equinox takes place.
Offerings, dances, representations of the creation of the Sun’s myth,
pre-Hispanic rituals, and ceremonies are made to summon prosperity
and well-being. This temple pyramid is the largest in the world, with
400 meters on each side, and much of it is hidden in the mountain.
