From a comprenhesive point of view, Health is affected by a complex interaction of numerous Social Determinants, risk factors, and lifestyles.
Preventive actions should focus on reducing and controlling risk factors and at the same time reducing inequalities.
So, in this frame What do NCDs and PDs have in common? They have three aspects in common. First, the complex interaction with SDH, second, the Risk Factors, and Third, the Inflammation. Regarding the risk factors, the most important link between NCDs & PDs are probably smoking and obesity. Futhermore, We know that microbial accumulation around teeth stimulate local and systemic inflammation. On the other hand, regarding SDs, Culture and education influence Oral and General Health Care Practices, with their expected consequences on Oral and Systemic Health.

At the beginning of my presentation, I talked about the need to integrate OPHI with public health iniciatives. A common risk factors approach sets the ground for health promotion. What health promotion is? It is the process of enabling people to increase control over and improve their health (Ottawa charter, 1986). This involves giving to individuals the personal skills that allow them empower to control their health. Based on Health Promotion, Healthy Life Styles and PHI arise as new approaches to prevent and control NCDs and Oral diseases.
With this proposal we could expect that DPs will be included by Health Systems and stakeholders into the Health Care Team, and wiill be recognized by patients and Communities as active members of the Health Care Team.
A New Vision of Health will arise based on the convergence of knowledges. Oral Health Promotion and
NCDs requires the interaction of all HCP and mostly, of the Community.
The experience of a Periodontal medicine Group in a Public health School is mainly higthlighted in the following 4 programs:
Healthy School initiative: Promotion of healthy nutrition and physical activity in children from public schools.
The exergames as a public health initiative to increase physical activity among the population
Health literacy taking care cultural and racial diversity directed to social minorities in Colombia
From Health promotion to social promotion using the school as a plattform to increase community participation
The experience from these and other programs of the Research Center gave us some learnings such as:
Comprehensive understanding and multidisciplinary vision of health, that permitted us to work with the local and central government.
Several health professionals, social science researchers and Engineers, involved in Health Care Teams focused to Health Promotion
Now, the proposal that has been working by some groups is to innovate with a joined public health initiative to link NCDs & PDs.
Therefore, it would be some opportunities and challenges such as
1. Increase Health Promotion awareness between DPs and other Health Care Professionals with the challenge of a New role for DPs in the Healthcare Team
2. Intervene common risk factors for NCDs & PDs with a comprehensive approach in order to Develop Guidelines to a “personalized” approach of NCDs & PDs.
3. Improve interactions between DPs & other Health Care professionals, working in the education of the new generations of DPs & other Health Care professionals with a more inter - transdisciplinary vision
This comprehensive approach of health promotion might generate opportunities to the all the stakeholders involved.
To the professionals the opportunities are the acquisition of a Health comprehensive approach to enhance the interaction with other Health Professionals
To the academia converge the knowledges thru a transdisciplinary work
To the government Developing & Implementing Integrated Policies in a trans-sectorial dialogue.
And finally to the private sector as Colgate, bridging with influential stakeholders, developing sustainable health promotion projects and maximizing oral health campaign impacts and coverage.
Public health initiatives must facilitate the interaction of this variety of sectors, that will lead to a:
Interdisciplinary dialogues even with professionals outside of health sector
Convergence of knowledge to facilitate solutions to the health problems we are facing today
Community health literacy and better educated and informed consumers that propel changes on Public Health policies and health care systems
Lets have a look at 4 typical families from around the world
Nutritional habits have a tremendous impact on NCDs. PDs also has been linked to obesity. Modern life style is a two edges sword. Comsuming large size meals increases the risk for NCDs. Mexico has become the country with the high obesity rate in the world because dietary changes in the last 30 years. Health literacy is one of the aspects necessary to work with since being healthy is a matter of choice.
In conclusion ORAL HEALTH AND OVERALL HEALTH ARE PART OF THE SAME EQUATION
THANK YOU
