ENTREVISTA
sabe.
Fútbol, atletismo, baloncesto,
taekwondo, golf,... ¿Prevén entrar en un nuevo mercado?
Acabamos de introducirnos en la
vela y este año no pensamos llegar
a otro.
No (risas).
No. Hemos seguido nuestro camino y estrategias. No ha cambiado
nada porque si se interesaron por
Puma es porque es diferente e interesante.

Now that production costs are increasing, what is the strategy to be
followed by PUMA in Asia?
It is clear that the cost increase is happening, both in materials and manpower. It is a fact we have to live with.
Part of the cost will have to be born
by the consumer, but we will have to
search for new places to produce,
places where production is lower
now and therefore so is the cost.
Puma is positioned as the third
company in sales of sports goods. At
the beginning of the year, an investment of around 120 million euro
was announced. Have you made
any deals already? What will the money invested in this year?
In general, marketing investment
Hill continue as planned, with big
events Duch as African Cup of Nations, Euro, Olympic Games and the
Volvo ocean Race itself. Regarding
other company’s acquisition, there is
nothing planned, but who knows.
Fútbol, Running, Basketball,
Golf… Are you planning to enter
any new markets?
We’ve just entered Mailing this year
and that’s all for this year.
Alter Euro and the Olympics,
have you already any results on sales?
I don’t believe in events having a direct impact on sales. But somehow
there is an impact on the image. Bolt
has been a great success when it comes to image and coverage, but to
the question if it really translates into
direct sales, it is difficult to tell.
Mentioning Bolt, how did you
manage to keep him“in the payroll”
despite tempting offers he got?
The Jamaican has had a contract with
the brand for the lastr five years and
there are many more to go. One thing
he really appreciated from the beginning was being the center of a
world advertising campaign. It is not
common to have a professional track
and field athlete be the focus, but so
was it decided as the Olympics got
closer, not even knowing how successful he would be.
Could you unveil how much the
Bolt sponsorship is?
No (laughing).
I have heard that you have a
strong passion for Africa.What’s the
situation for PUMA in that continent? What are your plans about it?
Puma is very closely linked to Africa,
having reinvented football as a category in the African Cupo f Nations
with the Cameroon sleevless shirt
and the one piece kit. In 2010, Puma
will be present at the World Cup living it in a very special way. Puma has
sponsored most of African National
Teams. It is clearly the leading sport
brand in African football.
The looking at Puma teams to be
present in 2010, other any surprises
to be expected?
In 2006, Puma already sponsor 12
of the participating teams. There
can always be suprises, as it was the
case for Togo then.
What is the role of Spain for the
brand’s expansion?
Spain is one of the key markets in Europe and with a greater growth in the
last ten years. It is particularly important because it is a market receiving a lot of tourists.
Once Pinault has become shareholder, has Puma changed in some
way?
No, we have continued with our path
and strategies. Nothing has changed,
they were interested in Puma because it is different and attractive as it is.

Rudolf Dassrle funda Puma
Schuhfabrik Rudolf Dassler.
tenis. En 1993 los atletas de élite
Heike Drechsler, Merlene Ottey,
Linford Christie and Colin Jackson

An overview
about Puma’s
history
The road that led to the PUMA
shoe factory owned by Rudolf
Dassler 1924– Brothers Rudolf
and Adolf Dassler found the company «Gebrüder Dassler Schuhfabrik» in Herzogenaurach, Germany. In 1936, Jesse Owens wins
four gold medals at the Olympic
Games wearing
the Dassler shoes.
Overall, numerous world class
athletes sporting
Dassler shoes win
seven gold and five bronze medals
as well as breaking two world
and five Olympic
records. Many years after (1948),
Rudolf Dassler
founds
Puma
Schuhfabrik Rudolf Dassler. The
same year, Pumas’s first football
boot, the «Atom», is launched on
the market.
The 1950s: Sports Achievements Shortly after the company
is founded, Rudolf Dassler successfully develops a football boot
with screw-in studs, in collaboration with experts, such as Sepp
Herberger. The launch of the
«Super Atom» the world’s first
screw in boot, which Dassler
launches in 1952, marks the beginning of a long-term and
highly successful relationship
between Puma and football. Puma is also successful in track and
field: 1954 –Heinz Fütterer breaks the world record in the 100
meters in Japan, wearing Puma
running shoes. 1958 –Puma introduces its trademark logo, the
unmistakeable Puma form strip.
In the same year, the Puma boot
is worn by players on both teams
and is the only German-made football boot in
the final.
In 1960, Puma partner Armin
Hary continues the company's
success story in track and field
and wins gold in the 100 meters at
the Olympic Games in Rome.In
1968 –The «Mexico 1968» running shoe amazes with its innovative brush soles– 68 small, only 4
mm long bristles in the front area
of the foot: Numerous American
athletes, who wear the shoe, set
new world records just a few weeks prior to the games in Mexico.
However, according to the association, the shoe is «too dangerous»
and consequently banned. The
athletes are deprived of the world
records. Nonetheless, Puma athlete Tommie Smith wins gold in the
200 meters and causes a stir: He
and his team colleague John Carlos raise their fists in the Black Power salute, protesting against discrimination of African Americans
and other minorities in the USA,
Apartheid and racism. In the meantime, Puma makes more history in football. The world class football players Eusebio and Pelé are
equipped with Puma boots and
Puma develops the legendary «Puma King» football boot .
The 80’s are dominated by the
tennis boom, triggered by Boris
Becker and his spectacular victory
in Wimbledon in 1985. As the
youngest, first unseeded and German player, he wins the tournament, wearing Puma shoes and
sporting a Puma racket. From
1984 to 1987, Puma also has Martina Navratilova under contract,
one of the most successful players
in tennis history. In 1993, top athletes Heike Drechsler, Merlene
Ottey, Linford Christie and Colin
Jackson win gold medals in track
and field at the World Championship in Stuttgart. In the 21st
century, Puma is constantly setting new trends and expands its
brand name range in the most
spectacular ways: As professional
equipment supplier in motorsports (Ferrari, Renault). In 2008,
Puma set sail for the first time by

60 ANIVERSARIO DE PUMA

LA PUMA KING
El modelo evoluciona y se relanzó
para celebrar su efeméride
Desde que las estrenara
Eusebio en 1966, el modelo King
ha evolucionado hasta nuestros
días. El último se relanzó en junio
con motivo de sus 40 años de vida.
Una leyenda del
cumple
40 años
2008 es un año especial para
Puma.

bota. La bota de principios de los

A football
legend
turns 40
2008 is a special year for Puma.
In addition to the 60th anniversary
of the company’s founding, the
company is celebrating the 40th
anniversary of the football market’s longest-serving concept still in
existence today: Puma King. A performance proposition that has
brought four decades of performance excellence, continuous
product evolution, and recognition by players around the world.
The history of the King –King Eusebio– began with the 1966 World

the «Black Pearl» and the «Black
Panther» – was, in many ways, a
modern player big, skillful, powerful, quick and cerebral. Few could
dribble with his cat-like grace, few
pounce on a chance with greater
agility, fewer still stop the thunderbolts that flew from his devastating
right boot.
Though Eusébio retired from active football, the boot continued to
evolve and came
to be known
simply as the
King. Worn by
some of the world’s most iconic
players over the
years such as
Pelé, Maradona,
Netzer, Kempes
and Matthäus,
the King has become synonymous with excellence and success.
After the debut as the King
Eusebio and its evolution in the
60s, in the 1970s, the King purified
its lines and adopted a revolutionary low-cut construction that
brought down its weight. Kangaroo
leather was used because of its
softness and ability to improve
comfort and touch. In this decade,
some of the greatest players of all
time wore the King as they accrued
titles and individual honors: In the
1980s decade saw the King on the
feet of World Cup™ winner and
Player of the Tournament, Diego
Maradona, as well as three-time
European Cup winner Kenny Dalglish - which further contributed to
the boot’s success story.
The KING of the early 1990s had

In 1998, for the first time in its history, and as the first sports brand
ever, Puma starts to merge sports
