Hello and welcome to our presentation on 21st century learning. At Microsoft we believe that Education is the single most important investment in our future. So we’re focused on developing solutions that will help prepare both students and educators with the knowledge and skills to meet the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century. Workplaces are increasingly competitive; the basic skills needed to function in society are more and more sophisticated; and the expectations of stakeholders are continually rising. In this presentation I’ll be showing you how the Microsoft platform enables you to deliver on this vision for 21st century learning by enabling an educational environment where innovative solutions connect students, educators, parents and administrators, so that they can participate in and manage a flexible, engaging and highly relevant learning experience.
Analyzing data from the math portion of the 1996 National Assessment of Educational Progress test given to students nationwide, Educational Testing Services researcher Harold Wenglinsky found that the effectiveness of computers in the classroom depended on how they were used. Wenglinsky found that if computers were used for drill or practice, they typically had a negative effect on student achievement. If they were used with real-world applications, such as spreadsheets, or to simulate relationships or changing variables, student achievement increased.
