Point out that B1 is the level of first year courses and B2 is the level they have to aim for by the time they finish their degree. If they already have this level, for example FCE, not to worry – the first year English courses are specific English, relating entirely to their degree programme.

For those of you worried about your English level or wishing to improve it, there are various ways to do this. First you have this English course during the first year of your studies. Next, the gradual integration of English into the degree programme in other subjects. Very little in the first year but gradually buiding up to a maximum of 50% of your subjects in English. Outside class the IML (Rectorado) offers general English courses. Sign up in the secretary’s office, 50 hours starting on 19 sept.
You can see that all of the block subjects are directly related to Physiotherapy. Each one lasts between 2 and 4 weeks. Obviously, we cannot go into great depth in any subject but we can introduce and practise some of the most used …end of each block there is a presentation or simulation that brings together what we have been studying and practising in the block. The final block is a collaboration between Fisio professors and the IML
Aim: Many of you have studied English for 12 years or more but have not had much chance to practise or use what you have learnt. Our main objective is therefore to develop your confidence and ability to express yourself, in spoken and written English, in professional and academic contexts. Each block builds up to a final project, normally a group presentation where you have research information in English and use all the language and skills developed in the block. These presentations are very useful for helping you to assimilate and transmit contents. You will be the professor for a few minutes. In class we work a lot in pairs and groups. It is very important to try to communicate in English with your classmates at all times. You can learn a lot from them and practice your English in small groups which is a lot easier for many people than in front of the whole class. If students only talk to their professor, they speak a maximum of 2 minutes each class. Using English in pair and group work increases this time to an hour. This requires a lot of effort and discipline from you but it works and you will see rapid improvement. Your professor will also speak English all the time. It can be difficult at first but you will soon see that it gets easier. Methodology: Classes conducted exclusively in English. Group, pair and project work where English is necessary. Difficult at first. More student talking time. Positive attitude towards errors.
