¿Qué es dharma, que no es?
referencia a algunos principios fundamentales.
Ghantasāla me
no!
44. What is dharma, what is not?
VAARANAASI Subrahmanya Shaasthry spoke so well about Dharma, especiallythe problemof
right andwrongas brought out in the episodes of theMahaabhaaratha. Of course,as he said,
right andwronghave tobe decidedin each case by the analysis ofthe particular context, with
reference to some fundamental principles. Those principles have beenvisualisedby Sages and
laid down in the Vedhas. That is why the Vedha is declaredtobe the root of Dharma. Ganapathi
Shaasthry brought out this primacyof theVedhain his talk. Bothof them havealreadyserved
youa fine banquet of wisdom. The time is 6.25 p.m.andGhantasaala, who is to give a musical
recital, has alreadyoccupiedthe attentionof most of you. Ghantasaala tells me that herequires
about half an hour tobegin andso, it seems, I have tokeepyouengageduntil he is ready,
whether youlike it or not!
Naturalmente, Yo siempre hablo del Dharma. Porque he venido a
restablecerlo. No tengo otro trabajo Aquí.
No
Naturally, I always speakof Dharma. For, I have come tore-establish it. I have noother work
here. I give what is Paanakam (sweet drinks)forthe ignorant andwhat is Amritha(nectar) for
the illumined. Youcannot inferthat Dharmais decliningonlyin India, because all the.
Avathaars youknowtook place here; theAvathaar has to take shape. in theplace wherethe
Dharma originatedandwhere it is still studiedandvalued. The rest' of theworldis but the
branches of this tree. ForMe, there is no native landorforeign land. All humanityhas to be
brought back to the pathof Dharma. The Vedha is Apourusheya---"Not ascribable tohuman skill
or authorship;"the Vedha Purusha (Soul of Vedha)is not ascribable toanyonecountry.Vedha
emanates fromwhereveryouyearn for it. All religions and Dharmas arebut proliferations of
Vedhic truths.
Intentions of actions should be pure
Human nature has to be chastened, controlledandguidedalongcertain channels; otherwise, like
the floodedGanga, it will bringdisaster to millions who rest in 'security, believingit to be
harmless. The hastetosecure an immediate advantage has to be cured, the later advantage may
be more lastingandmorehealthy; benefits tothe individual havetobe given up in favour of
benefits to thegroup, thevillage, thecommunity, the countryor the wholeof mankind. Ideas,
principles, laws, 'customs, codes, habits,actions---all aretobe judgedon the twin points of
intentionandconsequence. Is the intention pure, is it bornout of Prema, is it basedon Truth?
Does it result in Shaanthi? If yes, dharmais enshrinedin that actionor law, customor conduct.
Intention andconsequence arethe two bunds that guide the floodwaters of the Godaavari safely
into thesea, which canswallowany amount of river water.
In fact, it is therule andtherestrictionthat gives charmtothe game oflife. If in thegame of
football anyplayer cando anythingwith theball, andthere is neither foul nor out, neither
offside nor goal, neither thrownor penalty, then it will be a meaningless game incapable of
givingAanandha.
Principles on which Dharmais based
Now, howare youto decide in any particular case what is dharmaandwhat is not?I shall tell
yousome principles which youcan use on such occasions. That which does not inflict painon
you. andon others---that is fight, that is dharma. Soact in such a way that youget joy andothers
too get joy.Or, takeanother standardfor your actions: Make the manas, the vaakandthe kaayam
(thought, wordanddeed) agree in harmony. That is to say, act as youspeak,speakas youfeel;
do not play false to your own conscience; do not cover your thoughts in a cloakof falsehood; do
not suppress your conscience by forcibly enslavingit andembarkingonactions not approvedby
it. That is thedharmic way of lifeFrequentlydoingright makes it easierandeasier, habit grows
into conscience. If youare once establishedin right conduct, youwill automaticallyfollowthe
right. What youdo depends on what youare; what youare depends on what youdo. Thet wo are
interdependent toa great degree.
Or, there is anotherprinciple. Dharmatrains youtobe calm, level-headed, secure in equanimity.
Youknowthe transitorynatureof success or failure, riches or poverty, joyor grief, appointment
or disappointment. Youare not elatedor deflated. Youare serene, unmoved. Anythingthat helps
youto maintainthis unruffledstability is dharma.
To cut it short: sensual life is adharma; thespiritual life is dharma.Dharma is that which
sustains, saves andsanctifies. Manis born andis given a lease of life so that he mayearnthe
knowledge of His identitywith theInfinite.
There are differences between the limbs of the body but they all belongto thebody; it is foolish
for themtoimaginethat theyare unconnectedwith the body. The Sun sends out a million rays
but they all belongto theSun. The Sun is reflectedin a million pots of water but though they all
are tiny images of theSun, the Sun is the Truthandthe reflections areall relatively unreal.
Trata a
Do not have a double standard
One common definitionof dharmais that it is the adherence to the rule: "Do untoothers what
youwish them to do unto you; do not do untoothers what youdo not wish themtodo untoyou."
Do not have a double standard. Treat all as your own sell That is to say, youmust have faithin
yourself andthenonly canyouhave faithin others. Youmust respect yourselfandrespect
others. Egoismis the measure ofaltruism. Mankindis one community; youharmyourself and
youharm all. Youmakea man standerect andthat act makes youstanderect.Thetreatment you
wish others torender to youis itself the measure of your duty to them.
