28. The search forquiet
THE name "Sanaathana"that youhaveadoptedfor your Workers Co-operative Industrial
Institute is strange, even for the Department overwhich the Minister who is herepresides. But it
is that name whichhas brought Me here. Youare all Sanaathana(eternal), though youappear
noothana(new), onaccount ofthis newdress youare wearing. This youcan discoveronly
through vidhya(learning) that instils discriminationandemphasises basic values.
Your Chief Ministersaidthis morningwhen this Societywas formallyinauguratedin
Shriraamapuram, that all our troubles arise out ofignorance andthat the spreadof education will
automaticallyremove them.I hadto correct himandsay that all our troubles are due to the fact
that the educatedare not educatedat all in thesubjects that reallymatter. Theyhave neither
viveka (discrimination),norvinaya(humility), nor vishwaasa(trust).Theydo not honour or
render gratitude to parents. They laugh at those who turntowards Godandthose who give the
world a minor place in thescheme of things. They do not appreciate thesimple pleasures of
meditation,of the recital ofthe Nameof the Lord, ofsilence andservice. Still, theyare burdened
with heavy degrees andtitles which proclaimthat theyare 'educated.' That is thetragedy.
The educatedhave noiota of thepeace that the uneducatedhave! They livein greater discontent
andmisery andare tossedabout without a rudder in a sea of troubles. Theydo not know
anythingabout thesource of Peace and Aanandha that theycarryabout withinthemselves; they
allowthe inner consciousness togo dry by neglect; theyare not aware of the means toirrigate it
with the waters of prema andgrowtherein thefruits of prashaanthi (tranquillity).
Without faith in God,man is blind
They readbooks but do not correct their modes of thinkingandliving. Theshelves of the
dispensary are full of drugs; but howcan your illness be curedif yousimply learnthe catalogue
by heart, or even thepharmacopoeia? Youhave to select thedrugyouneed, drink it,imbibe it,
assimilate it andcounteract the cause of illness.
For example; I have nowbeen movingaroundthis Bangalore andotherplaces for morethan22
years; but though lakhs of people have seenMe, those who have understoodMy Natureare very
few. This is because the simple exercises of sravana, mananaandnididhyaasana(listening,
reflectionandconcentration)are not practisedby people; theydo not knowhowto recognise
Divinity in themselves or others. Theysimplyprodandexhort eachother toserve all as God's
own Forms. This has becomemereconventional talk devoidof inspirationor meaning.
In India, from veryancient times, the Glory, the Divinity, thesanctityof manhas been
proclaimedandthe way of recognisingit has been taught. Only those who have learnt them
deserve to be the sons anddaughters ofthis land. Others are like thekokil birds, the cuckoos that
are born in the nests of crows; their place of birthis India, no doubt, but they arebasically aliens,
of a different species altogether.GuruNaanak saidthat without faithin God, man is blind;
without it, youare movingcorpses. Yourlife might be as grand, as beautiful, as rich as the Taj
Mahaal---but rememberthe Taj is but a tomb!Whatever themethodof worship,whicheverthe
Name or Form, it is Faiththat matters; it is that which gives life andenergy for higher things.
Créanme, no pasará nada; No, no
Do ritual worship for the sake ofhumanity
There is this panickytalkabout the Ashta-grahakoota---of thecalamities that the conjunction of
these 8 planets will rain uponmankind. Likethe tail of Hanumaan withthe flame at its tip, which
lengthenedon andon, settingall Lanka onfire, this panicis increasingeverymoment andsetting
every one on edge. Believe Me,nothingwill happen; no,thereis no danger at all. Of course, in
this terror, people areeverywhere doing yajnas andpuujas, which are by themselves good. They
give yousome courage andpeace ofmind. So far, so good. Evenamongthese, I like the puuja
that is done not for thesake of the individual but for thesake ofhumanity. By all means, do
puuja in ordertopromote thehappiness andpeace of livingbeings. Developthat love formen
everywhere. That is My mission too, Myresolution, My sankalpa(Will),My deeksha (vow)---
the plantingof lovein every humanheart.
No habrá pralaya
The Lordis prema;premais paramaathma. If youfill your heart with prema, hatred, envy,
greedandegoism cannot enterit. There will be no pralaya(devastation) for a prema-filled earth.
The onlychaos that mayhappenin February next is the chaos of failure formany candidates in
the General Elections! No one else needworryoverthe conjunction.Chaos orno chaos your
duty is to pray forthe welfare ofthe worldandto workforit as far as lies in your power.Pray
for Prashaanthi for all; do your bit for it by not addingto the Ashaanthi(disturbance)that exists.
calamidades.
Every one is basically God; that is tosay, basically, you. He is the InnerMotive in all. Every
Indian knows this in the depths of his heart; hehas imbibedit with the mother's milk; that
knowledge, andactionaccordingtothat knowledge, are thehall-marks of the Indian. That should
make the genuineIndianfearless; for the Aathma, which hereallyis, cannot be affectedby pain
or death or joy oraccident or calamity.

What is the use of searchingfor quiet, available onlyin the silence of theInner Awareness, in the
jungle of Prakrthi (world)? It is like searchingfor somethingyouhavelost in your roomunder
the street lamp.Your "self"youhavelost; searchforit in youthat is the pathofwisdom.

Tu mente también es como los genios (seres invocados); te destruirá si la dejas inactiva;
Sathya Sai Baba
Your mind toois like the jinn;it will destroy you if left idle; so,
order it to move up anddownthe pillar of Soham--- "He-I,""I am
He" "I am that."
