vida.
35. Inner progress
THE NewYear which youhave calledin today with the exit ofthe oldyear, has an auspicious
name, Subhakrith. Your arrangingthis Festival in honour of Saint Thyaagaraja onthis day is
indeedan auspicious way of welcomingthe auspiciously namedNewYear. I congratulateyou.
I am comingoften to inaugurate the Festival forI feel it is a part of the task for whichI have
come. I may tell youthat I am comingtoday straight from theveryregionwhere Thyaagaraja
livedout his life.
I findthat youin this Holy Town Thirupathi are not all imbuedwith devotion to theDeity who
has made it His Home, Shrinivaasa. Most of the people here liveon theLord's bountyor
'property' or 'charity'.The income fromthe shrine ofthe Lordis utilisedin runningcolleges,
hospitals andin various other ways. That is to say,it is takingthe lives ofmany thousands happy
andcontented. I do not blame themfor livingupon theincomeof the Lord, for, what does He
want it for, if not for theneedy andthehungry? But let Me adda warning. If it is eatenin excess,
calamity will intervene. Eat as much as youdeserveforthe toil youhave put in, for thehunger
youhave acquiredby your exertions in a goodcause. What is thetoil which entitles youto
consume the propertyof this shrine? What is the exertionwhich the lordapproves? Only
spiritual toil andspiritual exertioncan entitle youto thesacredshare; only dhyaana and
Naamasmarana, steepedin the thrill ofdevotion!
Idol worship is nota sign of barbarism
The true culture of India is a structurethat is built on four pillars---Sathya, Dharma, Shaanthi
and Prema(Truth, Virtue,Peace andLove). Everyone of youmust be aware of this fact. Ifyou
are, then youwill not be attractedby cultures that arebuilt on less durable foundations. The
culture that has tobe protectedby thebombcannot claim prema as oneof the pillars onwhich it
is erected. Bhaarathis a landwhere since millennia people have been prayingforandtoilingfor
the peace andhappiness ofentirehumanity. They never prayedfor success in the wickedrace for
wholesale slaughter.
Do not swallowwithout discriminationthe criticisms hurledagainst youthat youare uncultured
barbarians, worshippingstocks andstones. Idol-worshipis not a sign of barbarism. No,it is as
significant andmeaningful a rite as the kumkum dot on the foreheadof the bride. TheIdol is
reveredas the Swaruupa(LivingForm)of theLord, He who pervades everythingeverywhere is
invokedandvisualisedin theIdol andapproachedreverentiallyby the cleansedmind, anxious to
efface itself in the Eternal andthe Universal. This attitude is called Prapatthi—Surrender for
Fulfilment.
negro, hace mucho, mucho tiempo."
presente, siempre vigilante.
Install Truth in theshrine ofyour heart
Without this attitude, worshipbecomes empty andvain. It is no use decidingjust now, when you
are listeningtoMe, that youwouldcultivate Faith andFortitude; andnot put that resolutioninto
action afteryouleave this place. Bhakthi is not measuredby the outwardsigns of tears and
exhilaration. It is an inner revolution, a transformationof all values andoutlook. Youmayhave
heardthe storyof the woman who was sheddingprofuse tears, apparently of exultation, duringa
Puraanic recital. The Bhaagavatharwas overjoyedthat day, forhe hadsucceededby his
touchingexpositionin evokingresponse fromat least one contrite soul. At the close ofthe day's
session, he congratulatedthe oldlady onher bhakthi andofferedherthe covetedfirst spoonful of
4. Holy Theertha (consecratedwater) as a tribute for her shraddhaandsaadhana(faithand
spiritual effort). But thelady deniedall claims todevotionandsaid, "I do not knowwhat that
thingcalledbhakthi is, northe otherthings named shraddhaandsaadhana.I shall tell youwhy
tears fell frommy eyes. That thickblack stringwith whichyouhave tiedthat palm-leaf book put
me in mindof the stringroundthe waist of mydepartedhusband; he wore a black string, long
longago." Mere external signs misleadtheobserver, but theycannot misleadthe Lordwho is the
ever-present,ever-vigilant Witness.
grupos partidistas.
Bhakthi will fosterprema, because it is born of prema itself. At present, this landis full of
factions andrival groups; all do not pull together andto thebest of their abilityandcapacity.
That is why it has become necessarytoask thehelpof other countries andpeoples andborrow
funds andburden ourselves with interest payments, etc. Thereis no co-operationand
willingness to sacrifice self-interest for thesake ofthe communityor countryor humanity. Every
village is riven by partisangroups.
a llorar!
I shall tell youwhat happenedin a village of this type. One sectionhadspecialisedin actingthe
drama, Lankaadhahana (burningof Lanka); but the other section decidedto enact thestoryof
KingHarishchandra instead. Forthe roleof Chandramathi, thequeen, theyhadtoselect a
person fromthe Lankaadhahana group because they hadno substitute actor at all. Thescenes
were followingone afterthe other. All went well until the prince diedof snake bite; thenthe
motherrefusedtoweep! The"son"belongedtothe opposite group. So vengeance was taken on
Chandramathi by Harishchandra. He rainedblows on her beingso callous; the drama spedalong
in another course, the course of hatredandfaction.
Yearn for illumination of your inner world
Thereupon, the Anjaneya of theLankaadhahanagroup brought things to a climax by jumping on
the stage in his role with a tail burningat one end; andhe set the theatreon firetothe delight of
his henchmenandthe consternationofhis rival!Youmust put onplay either Harishchandraor
Lankaadhahana; it will endin a holocaust if youplay bothtogether onthe same stage. Rather,
prefer Harishchandraandreject the playingwith fire. Install truthin the shrine ofyour hearts and
that will engender the wholesome habit of brotherliness amongall men.
Well, the electric lights havestartedburningagain andI see youare all satisfiedthat the line was
set fight so soon.I knowhowgreatlyyouyearnedthat the illumination ofthis Pandal be restored
soon andyoufelt sorryanddejectedwhen youhadtosit under dull improvised, kerosene light. I
want that youshouldyearn alsofor theilluminationof your innerworld, therestoration ofthe
current toshedlight onthe darkrecesses of your minds. That is what is called bhakthi, the
yearningforLight, for Illumination.
People blame theLordfor all ills causedby their own extravaganceor ignorance.Theyare
themselves toblame forthe sufferings theyundergo. Sufferingis due to ignorance only.Takethe
case of even physical ills andphysical suffering. Most illnesses are due to overeatingor faulty
eatinghabits. Mithathindi, athi haayi--Moderatefoodgives immense comfort. Thefoodmust be
clean andpure andderivedthrough puremeans; andthe strengthderivedfromit must be directed
towards holy ends. Then, livingis worthwhile.
Food is the basis of man's character
Remember that Thyaagaraaja kept such rules rigorously in mind. He never dinedoutside his
home or ateunconsecratedfood. Many thought that he was a conceitedfool who was needlessly
strict. But there are subtle influences that pass intofoodfromthe persons who prepare it and
handle it andare absorbedby those who eat it. Foodis the basis of characterThe state ofthe
mindis conditionedby that ofthe body.
horrible experiencia.
I shall tell younowof an incident that happenedeightyyears ago. There was a great Yogi,
Hamsaraaj by name,at Badhrinath. He was always immersedin singingthe gloryofthe Lord.
He hada disciple who was equally earnest andsincere. That youngmanwas pesteredfor a few
days by a dream which gave him no peace. He sawa fair younggirl of sixteenweepingin great
agony andcallingout pathetically,"Can noone save me?"The disciplewas amazedat this
strange dream; he couldnot shake off that doleful figure andthat desperate cryfrom his mind.
He recitedhis woes to the Master. Hamsaraaj,I can assure you, was a true Hamsa (the Birdof
Paradise). That birdcan eschewwater from milk. Hamsaraaj, by his viveka, analysedthe
situation anddiscoveredthecause of that horridexperience.
fiesta y comido algunos pūris y chappathis (panes y masas).
He proddedthe youngmanwith such questions as: "What didyoudo the first day?" "Where did
yougo?" "What didyoueat?" etc. It was revealedthat he hadgone witha friendtoa feast and
eaten some puuris andchappathis. It was discoveredthat a poor Brahmin hadpreparedthefeast.
Well, Hamsaraaj sent thedisciple tofindout why andwith what resources that Brahminarranged
7. the feast for the recluses of Badrinath.
Examine the source ofthe food offered
The youngmancursedthe day when the dreamstartedhauntinghim, forhe was nowbeingsent
by his Master on purposeless errands to investigate irrelevant issues; he wonderedhowhis
saadhana couldbe helpedby all this. Nevertheless, hewent andpursuedthe inquiry about the
feast andits origins andthe wherewithalout ofwhich it was prepared. It came tolight that the
funds were suppliedby a sixty-year oldmoneylendertowhom a Brahminhadgiven his
daughter in marriage andreceivedin returna sum of tenthousandrupees. She was now
appealingtothe holy menfor a bit of human kindness towards a forsakenchild.
Hamsaraaj thus demonstratedtohis disciple that one shouldexamine the source of thefood, the
motives for the gift andthe passions that surge andsway the giver before acceptingsuch an
intimate gift as food.
Youmay say that saadhakas alonehavetobear such rules in mind, but tell Me who is not a
saadhaka. All are pilgrims onthe road; some goingfast, some goingslow, that is all. The goal is
the same for youall, though theroads maybe many.
georgettes (tela crepe) y abrigos. Bueno.
Youare all culturedandcivilisedaccordingto current notions. Of course, thereis a vast
difference betweenthe methods of livingnowandin the past.Man has travelledfar from the
days when he wore the barks of trees or leafgarments. Today is the day of nylons andgeorgettes
andbush coats. Well. Admittingthat all this is a sign of higher civilisation, shouldthere not be a
correspondingrise in the level of thinkingandfeelingandaction, in the arts of livingtogether
andearningmental peace andpoise? The spiritual life ofmanmust alsobecomemore cultured
andcivilisedis it not? There must be gratitude forthe chance of life, forthe blessings of the
beauty andbounty ofnature, anda realisationof themore durable values of life. Attachment to
sensory pleasure has to be discardedin preference to themore lastingjoyof innercontemplation.
Estado y Estado.
Prayercan bring aboutthe impossible
Thyaagaraja haddiscoveredthat joy.He gave expression to that joy inmovingmusical notes,in
simple sincere words in songs that bringtears to theeye andthrills tothe heart. The Raaja of
Raarnnad, who is the President of this Festival, comes from Thamil NaaduandtheThelugu
language in which Thyaagaraja sangis strange tohim. Yet, he is profoundlyaffectedby the
music; he loves the Krithis (songs) verymuch.Knowingthemeaningof the songs andthe
context which begot them so spontaneouslyandso sweetly fromthe sublime devotion of
Thyaagaraajawill make youimbibe the spirit better; thelanguage in which he sangis the
language of the seeker,the saadhaka,the stragglingsaadhak,andveryrarely,the satisfiedsage.
Youcan easily learn that language, the language of the saadhaka.Do not keepaway from it
because it is not the language towhich youare accustomed. There is no place forhatredin this
field, nor between StateandState.
Tirupathi, 05/04/1962
9. This is a sacredtask on which the Committee has entered. Theymaysometimes feel the burden
to be too heavy; they may evenreel under the weight of disappointments anddifficulties. But I
assure them they have noreasontolose heart. LordShrinivaasa opens His eyes andyour task is
accomplished. AndHe will open His Eyes. Havepatience andwait prayerfully.Prayer canbring
about the impossible. Recite the glory ofthe Lordandrepeat in the cavernof your heart His
Name. That will bringsuccess.

(cuerpo).
Sathya Sai Baba
The body is but a boat, an instrument for crossing the sea of
change, that you have through the merit of many generations.
When you have crossed the sea, you realize the Dweller, in the
Dwelling. That is the purpose of the body.
So, even when the body is strong and skills even while the intellect
is sharp and the mind alert, effort must be made to seek the dehi
(dweller), in the deha (body).
