39. The inner prompting
THE day is Vyaasa Pournami andit is also celebratedthroughout India as Guru Poornima. The
importance of theflay has been explainednowby theLawyer fromRepallein Thelugu, by
Vineetha Raamachandra Raoin Kannada andby the Editorof Sanaathana Saarathi in English.
Well, I shall also speak now. WhateverMy language, I speak not toinform but more to heal. I
administer medicine for your minds, not foodforyourbrains, orrather it is both; like honey, it is
both foodanddrug.
There is nothingspecially relatedtoSage Vyaasa which makes this day attachedto his name.He
was not born onthis day nor didhe 'leave' onthis day; it is just dedicatedtohis memoryand to
the worship of all Gurus. ForVyaasa is the Aadiguru, theMuulaguru(the. first andthe source of
all spiritual teachers). He recognisedanddeclaredthe Truthin a variety ofways andhelpedin
openingthe inner eye of man.He describedin beautiful simple, clear terms the Glory ofthe Lord
andof the means of attainingHim.He sawthat unless the Mindis negatedor destroyed, the Lord
will not be manifest. He prescribedthe paths by which this couldbe done. So he is the Lokaguru
(worldteacher), the Paramaguru(greatest teacher). He collectedthe hymns, collatedthemand
put them intothe FourVedhas; he assembledthe laterVedhic literature andcomposedthe
BrahmaSuuthras (aphorisms onSupreme Reality)toexpoundthe philosophythat was inherent
in it. He wrote theMahaabhaaratha, which includes the universal specific, the BhagavadGeetha.
Then, when he was sunk in sadness, in spite ofall this knowledge andscholarship andteaching,
Naaradha advisedhim tosingthe glory ofthe personalisedaspect of Godhead, to wakenthe
emotions andguide them Godwardthrough bhakthi. That gave himandtheworldgreat joyand
peace, for Vyaasa thenwrote the Bhaagavatha.
Discover that happiness is an inner gift
Now, whether it is Vyaasa orthe Guruwhom youhonour today, the more important thingis the
Pournami (Full Moon) that happens today;that is the one thingcertainabout it; the rest ofthe
story is conjecture. The Guruis neededwhen youhavethe guri ('Goal' or 'Aim' in Thelugu). If
youdo not havethat urge, what canthe teacherdo? On sandor rock,if seeds are strewn, it is a
sheer waste of precious stuff. Inner promptingtosee the light must sendthe aspirant tothe
teacher ormust drawtheteacher towhereverhe is. Youmust inquire anddiscriminate: Do
objects grant happiness? Is any one happy?Howcan onebe happy through themultiplicationof
desire andthe frantic effort tofeedthe ragingfire? At last, youwill by your own experience,
discover that happiness is an inner gift, a spiritual treasurethat canbe won by equanimity.
3. The Moon is thepresidingdeity ofthe mind; it must shine cool andcomforting, eternally,in
fullness, in the Hrudhaya-aakaasha(the inner firmament ofthe heart). The external material
Moon waxes andwanes but the mindshouldbe trainedtostandup against modifications and
moods. Theinternal Moon has nomarks onit; it is ever full, it is always Full Moon fort he
victorious spiritual aspirant.
y obras.
Man is possessed by the ghost ofMaayaa
The mindspins a cocoon for the jeevi (individual soul) to be imprisonedin. Karma, which is the
activityof Maayaa (ignorance), encloses the individual in its grip; it is the husk that makes the
paddy seedgrow andyieldmore paddy plants andmore grains of paddy.Remove the husk and
there is no more sprouting. The husk, karma, makes the jeevi sprout andundergo thepenance of
vaasanas (goingthrough the pleasure andpainproducedby the impressions unconciously left on
the mindby past goodorbadactions) and samskaaras (performance of purificatory rites and
sacredceremonies), Yourewardandpunish yourself as the result ofyour own activities; youare
here because youwishedto come here; yougravitate to thelevel towhich your deeds dragor lift
you. Youmake your own future by yourthoughts anddesires anddeeds.
Maayaa is like the ghost ofa tribal woman, which oncepossesseda great Pandithin a
Himaalayan hermitage. The unfortunate Pandithsanganddancedlike anytribal damsel; he
swore andcursed in the Paisachi (ghost) dialect andeveryonein the hermitage became ashamed
of his company. At last, when theghost was exorcisedandthe Pandithwas freed, he became his
original self; he rememberednothingof his pranks andblabberings. Manis similarly possessed
by the ghost of Maayaa. Theghost has tobe driven out.
La forma de exorcizar este fantasma (māyā) se enseña por el ‘guru’ o Gītā. No desesperen;
No duden o den rienda
No permitan
The mode of exorcismof this ghost is taught by the Guruor theGeetha. Do not despair; it canbe
driven out. Confidence adds the requiredcourage andstrength.Do not doubt or give vent to
despair. It must happen whether youwelcomeit or not, whether youstrive for it or not; that is
4. your reason fortakingbirth, the goal youhavetoreach. Youhave not come to be a tool in the
hands of a ghost. The ant moves steadily andslowly towards its goal, climbingover everything
that comes in its way. Let yours be thesame Pipeelikamaarga (path ofthe ant). Followthepath
of Naamasmarana steadily, climbingover all obstacles like sloth, pride, haste, doubt, etc.
No
The Guru can help youtoa certain, extent only, but be grateful tohimforthat little. He is like a
skilledgardener. who tends the plants andwaters themintelligently; cuttingthe tree intoproper
shape, applyingthe correct manure to supplement the soil andkeepingit free fromdrought and
pests. Give the Guruthe gratitude for all this service; but reserve Sharanaagathi (seekingrefuge
for portection) for the Lord. Do not offerthe Gurumore than his due. Do not also change your
allegiance.
Do saadhanain unbroken disciplined way
Youcannot sell your house to some one andlater, mortgage it toanother, andrent it out toa
thirdparty after some further interval. Shri Raamakrishna hadtocut asunder eventhe form of
Kaali when it came across his pathtowards therealisationof the Nirguna(formless) aspect of
God. Do not do spiritual practiceoff andon; do it in an unbroken disciplinedway. Otherwise, it
will be like wateringa plant for some timeandleavingit togo dry beforeyoustart again.
The Bhru-madhya(centre point betweenthe eyebrows) on whichyouare askedto concentrate is
not thepoint where your eyebrows meet in the centreof your forehead; it is a point in your inner
awareness, the hrudhaya (heart). Like thecelestial damsels that were sent by Indhra tobreakthe
penance of sages, youwill be gettingduringmeditation nine varieties ofmusic, but youshould
not be elatedby that andsuspendyour saadhana.
ayudarte.
Prashanti Nilayam, 17-71962
5. Guru Pournami here is distinct fromthe festival in other places. Between youandMe, it is not
the relationshipbetween Guru andsishya (teacher anddisciple)that prevails, or that of the Guide
andthe Pilgrim. The external Guru shouldnot be equatedwith theSarvantharyaami (innermost
soul in all the hearts).Even Garuda cannot reach theGoal if it does not spreadits wings andleap
into thesky. So, make a move, put a stepforward. That is the immediatetask; yourresolve on
this day shouldbe that start with a sincere desire tosucceed. Light will be shedby the Grace of
the Lord. TheLordhas cometohelpyou.
Prashaanthi Nilayam,17-71962
Sathya Sai Baba
Practise the attitude of offeringevery act at the Feet of God as a
flower is offered in puuja. Make every breathan offeringto Him.
Do not be upset by calamities; take them as acts of Grace. If a man
loses his hand in an accident,he must believe that it was the Lord's
Grace that saved his life. When youknow that nothing happens
without His sankalpa (resolve), everything that happens has a
value addedto it.
