2. Los efectos adversos de los plaguicidas dependen
principalmente de los siguientes factores:
1. Tipo de Plaguicida.
2. Tiempo de Exposición.
3. Dosis o Concentración.
Los plaguicidas orgánicos sintéticos neurotóxicos han
sido diseñados para afectar el sistema nervioso de
los insectos plaga, pero debido a la semejanza entre
los distintos organismos resultan también tóxicos
para otros animales y el hombre.
Además de su efecto sobre el sistema nervioso, muchos
de los plaguicidas producen otras alteraciones que
pueden resultar letales a largo plazo.
3. Los efectos AGUDOS varían desde irritación en los ojos,
vías respiratorias y piel hasta síntomas más severos que
incluyen coma y muerte en caso de intoxicación masiva.

AGUDOS Y CRÓNICOS.
4. Los efectos crónicos se manifiestan luego de una exposición
prolongada a concentraciones muy bajas de plaguicidas, e
incluyen entre otras: alteraciones respiratorias, cáncer,
desórdenes neurológicos, hormonales y reproductivos.
Generalmente los organismos acuáticos son altamente sensibles a la
presencia de plaguicidas, y por lo tanto se los utiliza como
indicadores de contaminación por estos xenobióticos.

AGUDOS Y CRÓNICOS.
5. Los primeros estudios comenzaron luego de la
introducción del DDT en 1943, se determinó que la
exposición a este y otros organoclorados afectaba la
reproducción de faisanes y codornices. Más tarde se
reveló por medio de estudios que producía el
adelgazamiento de la cáscara de los huevos en aves
rapaces que se alimentaban de peces contaminados.
A partir de allí se han realizado numerosas
investigaciones para determinar los efectos agudos
y crónicos sobre organismos NO BLANCO.

EFECTOS SOBRE POBLACIONES.
6. Los insecticidas neurotóxicos organofosforados y carbamatos
producen efectos agudos en animales, observándose un efecto
directo sobre poblaciones de aves migratorias, disminución en
especies de anfibios e invertebrados acuáticos.
Un caso emblemático es el del aguilucho langostero (Buteo
swainsoni) afectado por los cebos con monocrotofós para
langostas.

7. Además de impactar produciendo intoxicaciones masivas, los plaguicidas
pueden tener un efecto indirecto al modificar la disponibilidad de comida o
el hábitat de los organismos no blanco.
En particular los herbicidas afectan a numerosas plantas que son utilizadas como
alimento o refugio por diferentes especies animales.
Otros efectos adversos asociados a uso intensivo de plaguicidas son la
disminución de insectos benéficos y la aparición de plagas secundarias.

8. Un compuesto es considerado
disruptor o alterador
endocrino cuando causa
alguna de las siguientes
acciones:
1. Imita a las hormonas
naturales.
2. Bloquea la acción de las
mismas.
3. Inhibe la síntesis de las
propias hormonas del
cuerpo.
4. Incrementa la síntesis de las
hormonas naturales.
5. Acelera la eliminación de las
hormonas naturales
alterando la función normal
del organismo.

ALTERACIÓN ENDOCRINA.
9. La alteración de la función hormonal sexual afecta la normal
reproducción debido a que genera modificaciones en el
desarrollo de los sistemas reproductores y en la fertilidad.
Los compuestos capaces de alterar la función endócrina
normal de las hormonas sexuales son diversas.
Una de las acciones más estudiadas es el efecto
estrogénicos, los que se unen al receptor de estrógenos e
imitan la actividad de estas hormonas sexuales femeninas.
Otros compuestos presentan actividad androgénica,
imitando la acción de las hormonas sexuales masculinas.

ALTERACIÓN ENDOCRINA.
10. El desarrollo de algunos invertebrados esta finamente regulados por
hormonas de crecimiento y reguladores de la muda. Algunos
compuestos son capaces de alterar la acción de estas hormonas y
de este modo afectar el desarrollo normal de estos invertebrados
y reducir su fecundidad.
El sistema que regula estos procesos se denomina Ecdiesteroide.

11. Las hormonas tiroideas
cumplen un papel
fundamental en el
desarrollo
embrionario de
anfibios así como en
su metamorfosis.
En animales No Blanco
se han detectado
tumores
desarrollados en
glándulas tiroides.

SOBRE LA FUNCIÓN TIROIDEA.
12. Un compuesto es teratogénico cuando es capaz de alterar el desarrollo fetal o
embrionario normal. Diferentes plaguicidas son capaces de producir efectos
teratogénicos en animales. Las causas por las cuales los plaguicidas generan
malformaciones y otras alteraciones en el desarrollo pueden ser diversas y
depender de los mecanismos propios de cada plaguicida.
Algunos OFs o CMs inhiben la enzima AChE de los embriones en desarrollo.

MORFOLÓGICAS.
13. La capacidad teratogénica de diversos plaguicidas ha
sido estudiada durante el desarrollo embrionario de
anfibios, por ser este un modelo adecuado debido a
su alta sensibilidad y a la relativa simplicidad de
manejo en laboratorio.
Numerosos trabajos reportan alteraciones del
desarrollo y la metamorfosis así como también la
aparición de malformaciones en estadios
embrionarios y larvales de diferentes especies de
anfibios sometidos a estos compuestos.

MORFOLÓGICAS.
14. Las sustancias químicas
denominadas genotóxicas son
aquellas capaces de generar
daño en el ADN.
Un compuesto puede ejercer su
acción genotóxica al unirse
directamente al ADN o
pueden actuar de manera
indirecta.
En este último caso pueden
resultar genotóxicos al afectar
enzimas involucradas en la
replicación /reparación del
ADN o también afectar al
material proteico involucrado
en la segregación
cromosómica.
EFECTOS GENOTÓXICOS.
15. Es importante señalar que existe una relación entre
genotoxicidad y cáncer. Si bien no todos los
compuestos genotóxicos son necesariamente
cancerígenos, la inducción de daño en el ADN y
las mutaciones son un paso fundamental en el
proceso carcinogénico. Asimismo el daño
genotóxico producido en períodos críticos del
desarrollo fetal o embrionario puede originar
teratogénesis.
EFECTOS GENOTÓXICOS.
16. Un agente carcinogénico, tanto físico, químico como
biológico es aquel que puede actuar sobre los
tejidos vivos de forma tal que produce cáncer. Los
compuestos químicos son considerados
carcinogénicos cuando al ser administrados a
animales de laboratorio inducen la formación de
tumores, aumentan la incidencia de tumores,
aceleran su aparición, o afectan la multiplicidad de
los mismos de manera estadísticamente significativa
comparada con los animales de control.
EFECTOS CARCINOGÉNICOS.
17. Algunos estudios de laboratorio demuestran que
ciertos plaguicidas son potencialmente carcinógenos
en animales, sin embargo resulta difícil establecer
una relación entre exposición a determinados
plaguicidas en el ambiente natural con una mayor
incidencia de cáncer. Existen compuestos químicos
que son carcinogénicos debido a su acción
genotóxica, es decir su capacidad de dañar el ADN.

ser cancerígenos al estimular la proliferación de
