CLEARING UP!If we were to add up all the rubbish that is carelessly and irresponsibly dropped, creating ground pollution, how much of the world’s surface would it cover? You can try to educate the litter-louts, but, from time to time, rolling up your sleeves and cleaning up the mess may be what is needed to protect our planet.Beach cleaning is a regular CAS activity. Waste harmful to sea life and a real eye-sore, is collected and disposed of.Onlookers are intrigued and, hopefully, awakened to a better conscience.
Bottles are recycled. Plastic is recycled to make fleece and returns to school as warm clothing for children in Puno and Huancavelica.Empty ink cartridges are donated to the BURNS hospital which resells them to the companies to avoid piracy.Tetrapaks are collected and sent to a recycling company to be made into furniture and place mats.
SAVING TREESRecycling paperThe whole San Silvestre community knows that waste paper goes in one bin, other rubbish in another. All collected paper is sold for recycling.Copybooks have to be used from one year to another until full. Old copybooks can be recycled.Newspaper CollectionAny school can do this. It takes one Saturday, hundreds of students, willing staff, sets of industrial scales (we borrow them from companies), computers for checking data and, if it is an inter-House competition, lots of colour and enthusiasm. In April 2008 we outstripped every record – why? The whole school is determined to save paper and the recycling team made a great impression with an Assembly on the effects of our deteriorating environment.Sample years Amount (kilos) collected 2004 37,536.50 2006 53,898.30 2008 72,980.00 ** An additional 3,500 kilos of excellent quality blank paper has been donated to our Community Service Schools. How much money was made? Approximately $7,000¸ BUT, more importantly, it was calculated that 1,032 TREES were saved.
