9. Should an EPODE-like campaign be extended
to the United States? EPODE is the most
comprehensive and cohesive model
considered by this research. Up to this point,
EPODE has not formed a version of its
program in the United States. Should it be
extended to this country? Should elements of
it be reproduced in the America context?
Following conversations with leading experts,
several standout candidates emerged. The
French organization EPODE had a clear,
outlined model that it succefully scaled to
other countries around the world.

Mathers CD et al. Global Burden of Disease 2000. Version 2: methods and results. Geneva, World Health Organization, 2002.

38. Los principales desafios de los programas
de prevencion de la obesidad
1.Asegurar recursos a largo plazo
2.Acceso a intervenciones cientificamente comprobadas
www.americavsobesidad.org
el mundo academico, politico y privado.
41. Instrumento de evaluacion comun
• to communicate to policy makers (eg. HEAT)
– Capacity-building in assertive communication strategies
• to estimate the cost-effectiveneness of actions
• Providing list of international key scientific experts
• Capacity-building to train LPM on evaluation and monitoring
practices
• the food and life style behaviour questionnaire according to
children age (NUTRINET SANTE´)
– adapted to traditional food consumption and life customs for each
country.
– Being able to measure Short, medium and long term

in EPODE pilot towns (2004) in France, It works in terms of decreasing childhood obesity. In a population of more than 23000 children measured, we have had similar results on a long term period (5 years) with a decreasing of almost 10% of the prevalence of obesity. This could lead to the decrease in the correlated healthcare costs.
The mobilisation of the whole community (2000-2004) is the key to decrease the obesity prevalence in children. The FLVS pilot study shows a substantial decrease in the prevalence of overweight in children in the intervention towns, although it took more than 8 years (1992-200) for the decline in prevalence to become apparent. FLVS study also showed a decrease of health inequities
VIASANO (Belgium) results after 2.5 years: significant 22% decrease in the prevalence of overweight in Marche & Mouscron. For Marche & Mouscron there was a significant decrease in the prevalence of overweight when compared to children with normal BMI levels (p<0.04)
