La fiebre reumática es una complicación de la infección estreptocócica que causa inflamación en el corazón, articulaciones y piel. Se diagnostica con antecedentes de infección estreptocócica y criterios mayores o menores de afectación de órganos. El tratamiento consiste en penicilina para prevenir episodios recurrentes, especialmente en personas con daño cardíaco. Las guías recomiendan profilaxis secundaria mínimo 10 años después del último episodio para prevenir complicaciones a largo plazo.

Todas las personas con AFR o RHD deben continuar con una profilaxis secundaria
