DEFICIENCY IN PATIENTS WITH SOLID TUMOURS: PREVALENCE AND MANAGEMENT IN
CLINICAL PRACTICE. Clin Transl Oncol 2013
Multicente, prospective and observational study in newly diagnosed cancer patients during 4
months. Prevalence of anaemia at baseline, in incidence during cancer treatment and
prevalencie of absolute and functional iron deficiency prior to chemotehrapy initiation.

The outcome, optimal use of blood is defined as:
The safe, clinically effective and efficient use of
donated human blood
Safe: No adverse reactions or infections
Clinically effective: Benefits the patient
Efficient: No unnecessary transfusions.
Transfusion at the time the patient needs it

reacciones transfusionales graves e infecciones transmitidas.

Pre-operative anaemia may significantly affect patient outcomes. Anaemic patients are at
increased risk of transfusion, mortality and major morbidity, in proportion to the severity of
anaemia. There are three distinct reasons to consider the identification and management of
pre-operative anaemia as important:
• Anaemia detected during surgical work-up may be secondary to previously undiagnosed
disease, e.g. malignancy.
• To reduce the likelihood of having to resort to transfusion, thus limiting demand on donors
and conserving blood supplies for those patients who need it most.
• To avoid unnecessarily exposing surgical patients to potential adverse effects of anaemia,
transfusion or both.
62. 63
1 Physicians should consider pre-operative anaemia and iron deficiency as an
indication for a perioperative care pathway that stretches from the decision to
operate until complete recovery from surgery.
